For me personally after Spielberg's LINCOLN and John Williams superb score for that film, movie music as never effected me the way it used to. Beautiful themes and great scores just sort of went away. Even earlier than that, let's say with the passing of Goldsmith and Bernstein in 2004, I felt film music started it's decline into dreariness. I mean there were scores that reached me like Danny Elfman's MILK in 2008 and I was touched by the continued work of James Horner up until the great Maestro's tragic passing in 2015. But I never felt the same about Movie Music after Williams' LINCOLN.
Perhaps I am being a tad Bold in my feelings, but that's just my truth.
Times change, people change, movie music changes for new generations. I feel a little sad, but for me film music's greatest days are long gone. How lucky though are we that we will always have that which was left by the great film composers of the past?
I am 61 years old now and started my adventure and love for Film Scores in 1968 when I was 11. My very first Soundtrack purchase was 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY and even though it wasn't a true "Original Film Score" it did effect me as to the power and beauty of music in films. I can remember watching a TV Broadcast around that same time of SPARTACUS and crying that night when I went to bed recalling Alex North's wonderful, engaging, triumphant and heartbreaking score. In that, I had found a great hobby that would become such a big part of my life. 50 years of memories of great movie music and the added bonus of going back to the 50's and even before discovering film music treasures by the likes of Alfred Newman. Perhaps others here on the board in my age range are feeling the same as me?

No for sure, it was good, not great. I thought it was a very predictable and pretty boring score, although of course, there are some fine highlights in there, including The People's House which might be one of the top 10 cues Williams has ever writtten... maybe, I struggle to think of 10 better cues right now.
For me, I would probably say that The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel from 2012 was the last great score.
Disagree about War Horse, War Horse was merely an ok score from Williams - I easily prefer The Force Awakens over it for a more recent JW score, his latest great score though was Memoirs of a Geisha. Nothing he has done since 2005 has improved on his repertory.
