We’re flying out this coming Friday for a few days in the Birmingham of the north in celebration of my birthday in January. We’ve booked a few things - The Van Gogh Museum, a canal trip, Shostakovich 7 at the Concertgebouw - but we’ll be wandering around a bit, and if we just happen to come across a CD shop “by accident”, then all the better smile

Any tips, fellow Northern Europeans?

Yes there are dozens of them there - keep an eye out for girls in windows, as they often wave soundtrack CDs at unsuspecting nerds and entice them in. Just tell mrs TG you are popping in to "check the selection" and likely as not you shouldnt be too long and to wait for you. Tell her not to come in the shop as the " Zimmer section would bore her to tears."

Yes, Concerto indeed. The rest are gone.

Concerto has new and second hand cd’s. Check them both!

Thanks for the sensible comments Saul and Sandor - I’ll certainly check out Concerto if I get the chance.

And thanks for your thoughts too, Bill. I’m sure Mrs TG will fall for that!

Last year I found 3 or 4 shops in the centre, but only Concerto was worth a look. Though the other shops Bill mentioned might be worth a look too...

Anytime I've been to Amsterdam, the last thing I've thought about is CD shops!

The Van Go museum is cool though, been there a few times.

I lived in Limburg for a while when I was younger, and we travelled up there occasionally.

Heh, good!

Thomas, the last time we were there (1990) there was a huge VvG exhibition with his works brought from all over the world. We couldn’t get tickets for love nor money.

Thanks Roy. Last time there we had a stroll around the area - it was raining so most of the windows were blacked out with tourists escaping the worst of the weather!

I too can only name Concerto, but you’ll problably won’t find anything out of the ordinary. If you’re planning to visit other cities (please do!), don’t do it for cd shops. Cd’s just aren’t a regular commodity here anymore.

There's also Fame, but they don't have much soundtracks.

Thanks John and Frank. There’s every chance we’ll jump on a train to somewhere outside of Amsterdam but nothing actually planned. I’d like to spend a week going around the Netherlands some time. I’ve seen Volendam and Marken but other bigger towns and cities would be fascinating.

They used to. I’ve spend lots of hours and guldens there big grin

To TG: I ‘m way to chauvinist to not recommend Rotterdam, if you’re looking for other cities. Come here for the architecture (which is amazing), the food and combine ‘m both in de Markthal. Great beer cafes as well.

I hear you, John (and Bill) Wow - de Markthal looks spectacular! I still have a yen to visit Arnhem, but Rotterdam is now on the list of possibilities as well.

Yes... on reflection, were I to frequent such a place, the Zimmer section might be all I could afford!
