It's the difference between a transfer from the original studio tapes versus hard drive transfers from secondary sources.
I'm sorry, but I don't know what you're talking about. The following quote is from the description of the FSM boxed set:
Williams's music to Superman: The Movie has been released on several occasions, most recently on a 2CD set from Rhino (now out of print). That album, however, was reconstructed using secondary dubbing elements, as the six-track 35mm music masters were unearthed only afterwards. For this definitive presentation, the entire recording has been painstakingly remixed and remastered from that first-generation source, yielding the best sound quality ever.
So the score in the FSM set is from a first-generation source. As I said, it sounds great to my ears. I'm not buying this score on CD for a fourth time for perhaps a marginal improvement in sound quality. I'd rather spend my money on a score I don't already own. But if other people are happy to spend their money for the umpteenth time on this score then good for them. It's their money.
Not exactly a first generation source. Not literally anyway.
The La La Land CD actually comes from the original 24-track session tapes, the true first generation masters that turned in the recorders as the orchestra played. The FSM set came from a secondary 35mm magnetic 6-track mix-down. The 2000 Rhino Records 2-CD set came from a third-generation copy of that 6-track mix-down which was edited to conform to the film's final edit and served as the dubbing element for the soundtrack stems on the film's sound mix. The Rhino CD was reconstructed from the trims.
Trust us: the improvements on the La La Land CD are not insignificant. A generation of duplication and compression is lifted, the sound is crisper and more dynamic, the depth of the sound stage and the individuality of instruments is revealed for the first time, the EQ is much more natural, and there is no distortion--which I could hear on some of the Main Title's Timpani flourishes on the FSM.
In the end though, it's your decision. Good luck.
