Not to be a Debbie-Downer, but I was so hoping that one of our labels had managed to wrest this away from Stylotone. I mean I want Herrmann's original recording of Marnie, but not in that packaging (I would probably only play the CD and never touch the vinyl or digital copy) and I'm not paying the ridiculous prices this most likely cost if Twisted Nerve is any indication.

I made this happen! I just ordered a copy of the unmentionable last week, feeling that this title wasn't going to surface.

Everybody who wants this release can thank me for taking one for the team.

I'd have preferred a different, more affordable label, but this will probably be the only legit release of this score in my lifetime.

Their "everything but the kitchen sink or nothing" approach is irritating to say the least. Jacking up the price by selling the CD, LPs, and download together is not affordable for many people, myself included. I just want it on CD. Do separate releases, like LLL, Intrada, Varese, etc. It's not that hard to figure out. I'll never understand how the Herrmann estate got affiliated with the hipster label out of all they could have chosen.

I share the misgivings of others here, but judging by TWISTED NERVE (2016), this will be the only legit availability of the complete original score. I'm not into download or vinyl, but I know damn well that I will spring for this release as long as it includes a CD ala NERVE.

Here's some actual information about the release...

Marnie 2LP+CD+7" super deluxe

Soundtrack specialists Stylotone, in association with The Bernard Herrmann Estate, will issue for the first time ever, from the original master tapes, the original motion picture soundtrack to Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 film Marnie, as composed and conducted by Bernard Herrmann.

SDE exclusive: First 100 pre-orders include FREE Pyscho black vinyl 7"

Never-before-available, the soundtrack to ‘Marnie’ has been restored from the original music masters and has been assembled, mastered and cut at Abbey Road Studios by engineer Sean Magee (famed for his work on The Beatles remasters).

Everything is produced to the highest standard from the spot-varnished heavyweight 320gsm 'tip on' gatefold sleeve, to CD in the vinyl replica sleeve and the astonishingly good 'quad' poster.

This Marnie super deluxe package comprises

  • two 180g scarlet-coloured vinyl LPs cut at 45 RPM
  • an expanded CD (in vinyl replica gatefold sleeve) with the complete score plus unused / alternate cues

Well, I'll buy it from Amazon, when the price for whole set will look like price for CD (£15-17), as I did with Twisted Nerve. Maybe it will take 3 months, or even year, but I can wait. Oh, and yes - I also never touch the vinyl or digital copy.

ps Funiest thing, that at same time, when Stylotone releases their super-duper deluxe (mostly) vinyl set, even Waxwork (!!!) will release TMNT on LP AND CD, separately. And I think they do this because they understand, that some people not just collecting their super-duper items. They also wants to listen it...

What I find hard to understand is that people think Stylotone is doing it this way because they don’t realize that some people just want the CD. Of course they know that. But this is the way that they’ve chosen to release it anyway, either because they believe this is the only way to monetize such a release, or because they’re avaricious, take your pick.

This is a shame because I literally have no use for an LP. And a digital copy? I'd make one myself as soon as it arrives.

I'd have paid up to $24 American for a CD release of this. Womp womp.

"...having sourced manufacturers who are able to produce all the parts on exactly the same machines as used in the 1960s".
Is that supposed to be a plus-factor? Have there been no improvements in pressing quality in the last sixty or seventy years?

1st post here because I really don't understand this widespread detestation concerning Stylotone releases... :/

The work done last time with Twisted Nerve was beyond any REAL fan music wildest dream : amazing audio restoration, gorgeous artwork, great packaging, multiples goodies and downloadable complete scoring sessions (all recording TAPES !!). I really don't know what's missing here.

So I already pre-ordered this new MARNIE masterpiece by Bernard Herrmann. And thank you Stylotone for this amazing work.

How do they manage to release a CD of Marnie when no other labels are able to do so? The only CD available with the OST is (was) not a legitimate one (at least in the US, it was sold in Europe at the time though). Weird that they succeeded where LLL, Intrada, FSM, Varèse and others failed...

It's not something missing, it's a matter of "too much." The price includes a CD, an LP and a digital copy. Two of these are useless to many people. Why would I need an LP if I have a CD of it? Why would I need a digital copy if I have a CD of it? If I only like LP quality sound, why would I need a CD of it? Etc.

Why not offer a tiered price point? $20 for the CD, $45-55 for a CD/LP/digital copy Deluxe Set?

As it stands, it's priced too high for me to buy a CD with an LP that will never be removed from the shrink wrap and a useless digital copy...

To produce a legal, good-sounding release, you need two things--the right to do so and a good set of tapes. Apparently, the Herrmann estate has both, and Universal was missing one or both.

This makes the most sense for CD collectors, given the situation. No amount of beating of breasts or gnashing of teeth here will change their modus operandi.
The other option is to buy the package and sell off the vinyl, or wait for a vinyl collector to sell off the CD.

That question had already been answered two years ago by Roger Feigelson on this board:

"Let's be fair...nothing got yanked from Intrada. We weren't able to work out a license on Twisted Nerve after a couple of years of trying. And while we discussed Marnie with Universal numerous times, we didn't get a formal commitment from them and while I'm not privy to the deal on Marnie, it clearly was something attractive to Universal. I have no ill will on anything, it's just the way the business flows sometimes. Although of course we'd have loved to do these titles."

Luckiliy, the complete MARNIE score has now finally been offiically released (even though of course it is a too expensive set again), but I ask myself why Stylotone needed two years to release this set. Their MARNIE EP came out in March 2016 and after their PSYCHO single nothing anymore so that everyone thought that the label was dead. I wonder that Universal from where they got the license didn´t complain to them that no release of the complete MARNIE came about during all this time. Above all as Universal will certainly get a revenue share from the pressed or sold copies of this LP/CD set.

...but I ask myself why Stylotone needed two years to release this set..

Cause the movie sucked and they thought no sane person would buy the music?
Actually over 2 years, won't be out until April 26.
