Revisited the movie on Blu-ray, not having seen it for 30 plus years. Really enjoyed the score and I see that the 1989 Varese CD goes for a hefty price. To enthusiasts of this score, does the CD capture the majority of the score's highlights? Is there anything in the wind about a remastered version ahead?

Love this score. It would be a perfect candidate for an expansion.

Rewatched about a year ago. It's aged very well. Arguably one of Carpenter's best, as it's so atypical.
Shame it didn't do well theatrically, but the film's stature has grown over time.

A remastered and/or expanded score release would be swell.

I've always liked this movie. Jeff Bridges gave a unique and strong performance and was nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globe.

The electronic score worked well in this movie. At times the score appropriately had an alien or other worldly sound, and at times it had real emotional heart. The music and movie brought out the need for a Kleenex or two.

Funny. I've always found this movie, and its score, to be very cold. Even when the score is in full bloom, it's pretty repetitive, and feels like it's working very hard without getting anywhere.

Just one man's opinion.

The film was a little to similar to E.T.
Intentional or not.
But i still like it !

I recently caught up to this film again and was bowled over by the performances of the two leads. Jeff Bridges' is very layered and complex; he is able to convey what the character is feeling while also expressing how unfamiliar he is with the body he is inhabiting. Meanwhile, Karen Allen gives us a character who has been emotionally stripped down to the bone, and her arc as she rebuilds herself over the course of the film was very moving to me.

I never had picked up this soundtrack album. It always sounded to me like a score with nice, if repetitive moments, but I didn't know how well it would hang together as a record. Nowadays, however, I would definitely pick up a re-issue.

We don't often agree ! smile ! but I've always considered Starman (1984) to be the adult version of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) ...

... and so much better!!! I can't recall which I saw first, but I think this is one of my favourite sci-fi films.

However: I'm not too taken with the electronic score. I have a cue lasting 4'40" on an old CD compilation disc which has sufficed ... a good reminder of the score.

Incidentally, I find that apart from this cue, the only other music I have by Jack Nitzsche is ...

... Needles and Pins - the Searchers (1963)

but perhaps my composer database is not 100% accurate.

I have always loved this film. The score was my first Nitzsche and I've loved it for a long time. I still have my LP. But, I'd sure buy a CD even if not expanded, but would love to know if it can be expanded.

I particularly like the orchestral version of the theme done by City of Prague Philharmonic.

I didn't mind the similarities to ET, but having the final shot be a literal recreation was a little much.

But I always prefer Starman to ET. It's more my speed.

It's better than MAC and Me...

I completely agree! That the last shot was identical to E.T. was kind of stunning.

It's pretty well known that Columbia Pictures was developing "Starman" for years along with "E.T." (at the time called "Night Skies"), and abandoned the latter in favor of the former. Of course, "E.T." wound up being the biggest hit ever at the time.
