My main familiarity with the Beatles is from hearing them on A.M. radio in the '70s. So I lean heavily toward the hits, and toward the polished studio versions as opposed to the raw cuts heard in "Anthology" sets and what have you.

I just added the Beatles to my iPod (yeah, I don't have a smart phone), and my first pass over their catalog found me choosing these six favorites. It's a surprisingly enjoyable change for me, the rock equivalent of classical music, you might say:

Help!
Nowhere Man
Let it Be
Hey Jude
The Long and Winding Road
When I'm Sixty-Four

I'm sure there are more songs I could get into.

What songs of theirs do you play routinely?

I loved either the Red or Blue album. I don't remember which. And of course HELP!. Many years ago when they released all the albums remastered on CD I picked them up. But never got around to making a "Best of Beatles" playlist of my favorite songs.

Have and love the Red and Blue albums; they were the first I ever owned by the long-haired lovers from Liverpool.

I strongly recommend buying Revolver...the whole album. Not a duff song there imo.

For something especially aesthetic (when one is in the mood to carefully listen) break out the Plastic One Band album.

How come, color-wise, I've only heard of the white album? All the other albums in Wikipedia go by names.

Edit: it appears to be a recent compilation.

Well, since I absolutely LOVE The Beatles, I would say everything! (With the possible exception of "Revolution No. 9", "Mr. Moonlight" and "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)", just because something has to be left out for the sake of space... wink )

Not really at all what you asked, but as I grew up listening (addicted, really) to them, I'm mostly stuck to their music as their albums were released (UK versions).
It may be silly, but I listen to an album at a time, not a greatest hits or playlist. I'm just too attached to all their songs. I don't even skip the ones I'm not that crazy about. It would indeed be a challenge for me to cull down to a playlist.

Really, now..... if you THINK about it, The Beatles were the Jerry Goldsmith of rock music! smile

My Beatles play list is, essentially, The Beatles.

Recently re-mixed, re-mastered, and re-released. Do yourself a favor and get it! Very reasonably priced at WalMart and Target!

This is turning into that thing on the other board, where people are asked to name their Grail, and they type out a list of 200 scores. My idea of a playlist would be ten to twenty really good, accessible songs. Your short list of very-favorites.

Well Jim, as I like the odd thing that the Beatles did, but have never had a playlist for them and am never likely to - I completely agree! big grin

Now I'm confused. Are you both talking about the so-called "White Album"? If so, it's just referred to that name because of its all-white cover. Its actual title is "The Beatles" and is a double album of new songs from 1968 (not a compilation). Some people hate it (like Mr. Marshall and Jim Phelps), while others find it quite a good listen in its eclectic song selection (like me).

Okay, I'll try to do that (in no particular order):

I Feel Fine
Back In The U.S.S.R.
Dear Prudence
Strawberry Fields Forever
And I Love Her
I Saw Her Standing There
Free As A Bird
Penny Lane
A Day In The Life
Something
In My Life
Tomorrow Never Knows
Drive My Car
Rain
Help!
The Word
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Getting Better
Here, There and Everywhere
Eleanor Rigby

Thanks, Jenkwombat. That's helpful.
