I just got through rewatching this on youtube.... a DAMNED FINE movie and very worthy sequel to 2001! I have a question... What happened to Max? It was never stated that he was killed.
I like what Hyams did for the most part, very nice production design. The script is not quite as strong as it could be, but plenty of good actors. This is a pretty interesting site that a guy was writing on 2010 for a while. I always thought that Max, unfortunately, got in the way of the Monolith's energy burst it sent to Earth (that message to his ex) and you see Max's pod spinning away, probably destroyed.
I just watched 2010 about a month ago. A recognize 2001 as the break through movie (on many levels) that it is, but prefer 2010.
I really like this film , rare attempt by Hollywood at serious Sci Fi. (though I have a few quibbles) The death of Max was unnecessary and just an attempt to add some "action" to the film. It was never clear to me what happened. I though he crashed into the Monolith.
In my hometown, when DVD was a new thing, the local Sears home entertainment department also had this as a demo film. I loved the menu with the spinning Discovery on it.
This is not a popular view probably, but I quite a bit prefer Hyam's Outland, which is one of the very very few R sci-fi realistic movies of the past 40 years, it is assembled like a metal box, finely shot, incredibly scored, terrifically acted with Connery and Sternhagen.
Still prefer 2010 to OUTLAND which is just such a naked attempt to mine the ALIEN ethos combined with the HIGH NOON plot. Do like the Goldsmith score though . . . and the teaming of Connery and Frances Sternhagen.
Ado we're usually in lockstep but I think its a terrible film.
LOL, so true, we hardly ever disagree, I admit that it is not original, at all. But I like it for what it is, hard edged and no fluffy Star Wars stuff to it, and so well crafted.

Those two actors and the finely crafted score, incredible, those chases through those industrial corridors, that Hot Water scored bit, perfection. Dirtied up atmosphere and wide lens work, pretty cool
