In case where you are searching for a beautiful soundtrack to play in this Christmas and New Year time, this one might possibly be for you. Hector Malot's book SANS FAMILLE narrating the story of the orphan Rémi in the XIXth Century is very famous in France and has been adapted on several occasions both for the cinema and the television. Carolin Petit scored the last version, a TV movie in two parts in 2000, of which the music has been released by Cinémusique. The soundtrack of the new movie entitled REMI SANS FAMILLE starring Daniel Auteuil as Vitalis has been written by Romaric Laurence, a musician I must admit I never heard of as of yet although I'm French. He delivered a very classical, tuneful and consistent score, as performed by the Galaxy Symphonic Orchestra and dominated by the piano and the strings. The result isn't surprising per se but very pleasant throughout, alternating lyrical/peaceful moments of nostalgia and tenderness together with a couple of suspense/action cues. Incidentally, I don't know if it was intended to repeat part of the success of Bruno Coulais' LES CHORISTES but beside the presence of Jacques Perrin as the narrator who's remembering the events of his youth here as well, several tracks have been sung by a young boy called Thibault Sallès, other ones by a singer called Nathalie Laurence-Sainz (as well as other female voices) and the song Garde confiance performed by the famous children choir Les Petits Chanteurs à la Croix de Bois (known for religious music in France). Generally speaking, I am aware that many foreign film music fans often hold the European scores as way too short, especially compared to American ones. This isn't at all the case here since the generous CD released by Milan has a total duration of 73' and only one track out of 29 is made of source music, actually a 2' excerpt from Mendelssohn's celebrated violin concerto, op. 64. You can make up your mind on YouTube. Here are for instance those excerpts: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GeXPsebAC_k https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0u6HRbvrNmo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bI-KaHalxHM Here's also a making of the recording of the song with the children choir: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PVYsAhxM5fA And the trailer of the movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MofrpQBty8k Enjoy! I wish a happy New Year to all members of the forum.

Just bumping this as I finally purchased this weekend (was on sale on iTunes). It's GORGEOUS. Seriously...lush, thematic and a great musical journey. Definitely shades of other scores (some very Elfman-esque moments with the wordless choir), but that doesn't detract from the score's many positives. I hesitated purchasing this score for a while as the samples almost made the score sound slightly hokey (the humming and singing, in particular). Gladly, I can say that listening to the score entirely yesterday I was entranced...I really think a lot of your would enjoy it...if nothing else, you will appreciate the wonderful craftsmanship and handsome orchestration.
