While listening to one of my favorite scores from Amazing Elliot Goldenthal, "Batman Forever", I was trying to list all the masterful scores that were created for awful movies. And there are so many!!

So here are few I can think of so far (of course the appreciation of how good or bad a movie is is purely subjective):

Batman Forever
Batman and Robin
Sphere
Under Fire
The Burbs
Star Wars Episode 1
Indiana Jones 4
Brothers Grimm
The Ninth Gate
Cloverfield Paradox
Solaris (2002)

Your turn!

Can "masterful" be more loose, like: terrible movie, but a good score that's way better than the movie?

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier always leaps to mind when this subject comes up.

as I wrote "of course the appreciation of how good or bad a movie is is purely subjective"

I'm sure Many people would disagree with you if you make a list, and that's OK wink

Supergirl.

Agreed with the "Get ’Burbs off that list" sentiment though :-P

The one that always come to mind for this question: RED SONJA. Terrible, terrible movie, absolutely masterful score by Morricone.

Pretty much everything assigned to John Scott.

Super Mario Brothers, it is surely in the top 10 worst studio pictures ever made. It is a trainwreck.
I cannot recall the score that well, but it is Silvestri, so decent at least.

SLAPSTICK OF ANOTHER KIND - terrible movie, but a fine score by Morton Stevens.

The Matrix trilogy.

I've never witnessed such an impossible diametric of quality between film and score, and I doubt I ever will again.

Lost in Space - Bruce Broughton - In league with his other greats, but the movie is torture - even with Gary Oldman

Yes there’s the matter of opinion and the matter of fact.

Batman & Robin: terrible movie = universally recognized fact
The Swarm: terrible movie = fact
The Burbs - watchable movie, far from terrible - fact!

Please edit your initial post and remove The Burbs from the list. You can replace it by King Kong Lives

Sorry for the fans but I watched THE BURBS for the first time a month ago. So I'm not tainted by nostalgia and I can safely say it has its place in my list.

To be honest, I don't find many 'awful' movies on your list. Some are rather mediocre, true (INDY 4, CLOVERFIELD PARADOX), but the rest is pretty good, IMO. Films like SPHERE, UNDER FIRE and THE NINTH GATE, for example, are absolutely amazing films!

As for my own suggestions, this is a topic we've done so many times over the years, that I don't have the energy to do another. To quote Bruce Marshall: "Use the search engine, dammit!". smile

Maybe explaining why you disliked it would go a long way towards sympathy. Admittedly, I didn't like it at first, but subsequent viewings got me onboard.

That said, you're just wrong putting any Star Wars film in that list. WRONG, I SAYS.
