Normally, I would be opposed to a ' live ' - action remake. But, it is directed by the guy who did THE JUNGLE BOOK reboot, which was wonderful. And it seems like they are reusing the songs; and maybe the score?
The thought of live action remakes of their classic animated films did not sit well with me, and certainly Cinderella and B&TB were predicable letdowns. But The Jungle Book won me over and at least presents me with an open mind regarding future releases.
Maybe JEJ dynamic voice pulled me in. But The Lion King looks "good" though it's troubling every scene in the trailer is an exact recreation of the 2D version. I hope there's more to it than that. I also hope they capture the spirit of the original soundtrack (like was done so well with TJB) without resorting to singing animals.
Then again The Jungle Book and Lion King are very different than the other two which were primarily live action and these remains primarily animation.
It isn't really a live-action remake. First, there are no human characters (like TJB) and most of it is cgi. It will be interesting to see how much real world footage they fit in. CGI is getting so good it is hard to tell the difference.
ANyway, classic tales like TLK lend themselves to various media. ALICE IN WONDERLAND, PETER PAN, WIZARD OF OZ, etc. have all been successfully translated.
Just read a feature in EW about this and Zimmer talks about his TOTAL involvement as musical director. I am surprised he took the time to commit himself this project. His reasons are very heartening!
