Thomas Newman is currently recording his score for the upcoming biographical drama Tolkien. The film is directed by Dome Karukoski (Tom of Finland) and stars Nicholas Hoult, Lily Collins, Tom Glynn-Carney, Craig Roberts and Colm Meaney. The movie tells the story of author J.R.R. Tolkien, author of the Lord of the Rings books, as he finds friendship, love and artistic inspiration among a group of fellow outcasts at school and serves as a British soldier in World War I. David Gleeson and Stephen Beresford (Pride) wrote the screenplay. Peter Chernin (War for the Planet of the Apes, Oblivion), Jenno Topping (Hidden Figures, The Greatest Showman) and David Ready (Red Sparrow) are producing the project for Chernin Entertainment, alongside Kris Thykier (Kick-Ass, The Debt) for Archery Pictures. Tolkien will be released in 2019 by Fox Searchlight.
As previously reported, Newman also has John Lee Hancock’s Netflix original movie The Highwaymen starring Kevin Costner & Woody Harrelson coming up.

Yeah, it's hardly a shock that Newman has a very predictable sound at this point in his career. It would be great if he branched out into sci-fi or something, but hell, even when he did that, it sounded no different!

Maybe the director will want Newman to play up the fantasy element in some areas and we can hear His take on Middle Earth. You never know.

While I do love Thomas Newman's work, it would've been more daring to try to get Howard Shore attached to this project. I would have been much more excited to hear what subtleties he could've come up with that would've tied the music together with his work on The Hobbit and LOTR.

I stated this in the other thread - a film about Tolkien deserves to stand on its own, not just provide an opportunity for connecting the dots to PJ's interpretation. Shore's work exists in that domain, and I love every bit of it. But it doesn't belong here.

I stated this in the other thread - a film about Tolkien deserves to stand on its own, not just provide an opportunity for connecting the dots to PJ's interpretation. Shore's work exists in that domain, and I love every bit of it. But it doesn't belong here.
Perhaps you're right. The film does deserve to stand on its own, apart from any connection with PJ's films. I think I am just biased and would rather hear any score from Shore over Thomas Newman. And one should never underestimate Shore's abilities. I think he could easily create music that is unique and beautiful for Tolkien while being wholly apart from LOTR and The Hobbit films.
Still, I am excited to hear what Newman creates.
