Music Composed and Conducted by Nicholas Dodd
Music Box Records - Limited Edition of 500 units
Reference: MBR-142

Newly remastered and expanded edition.
77 minutes of music including over 50 minutes of music never-before released.
12-page CD booklet with liner notes by Daniel Schweiger.

In collaboration with Onyx Films, Music Box Records proudly presents the remastered and expanded CD release of Nicholas Dodd’s original motion picture score to the 2006 animated tech-noir science fiction film Renaissance directed by Christian Volckman.

In 2054, Paris is a labyrinth where all movement is monitored and recorded. Casting its seductive shadow over the city is its largest company Avalon, which insinuates itself into every aspect of contemporary life to sell its primary export: youth and beauty. In this world of stark contrast and rigid laws the populace is kept in line and accounted for.

With its doom-drenched cityscapes populated by anguished detectives, cunning crooks and the femmes fatales who play them all like puppets, the black and white imagery of classic film noir has yielded any number of colorful film scores. This contrast has never been so striking as with Nicholas Dodd’s combination of Hollywood’s orchestral past and the pulsing electronics of France’s future for 2006’s Renaissance – a 2054-set movie truly before its time in pushing the genre’s visual and musical boundaries into the realm of animation. The English language version featured the voices of Daniel Craig, Jonathan Pryce, Romola Garai, Catherine McCormack and Ian Holm.

The soundtrack was issued on CD in 2006, it only included 25 minutes of Dodd's score and featured additional music by other composers. The current release adds about 50 minutes of powerful orchestral score performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra in London and features all the music written by Nicholas Dodd for the film, including cues not featured in film.

Produced, edited and assembled by Édouard Dubois in consultation with the composer and director, Music Box Records presents for the first time the expanded orchestral score to Renaissance, newly remastered from the recording sessions elements.

The package includes a 12-page illustrated booklet featuring exclusive in-depth liner notes by writer Daniel Schweiger and new comments by Nicholas Dodd, director Christian Volckman and music supervisor Édouard Dubois.

Wow, thanks for the heads-up on this!! This seemed to come and go with little notice, but I thoroughly enjoyed both the film and the score. It's very much in line with David Arnold's late 90s/early 2000s output, bearing more than a passing resemblance to the Bond scores. I would highly recommend this overlooked gem!

Ordered! big grin

This is a good score so the thread is worthy of a bump.

A film score composed by Nicholas Dodd—and from 2006! Never knew he had written one. The samples sound great. They do have that classic Arnold/Dodd sound.

Thank you very much for posting this, Peter!
This is fantastic news and a nice early Christmas present :-)

I’ve been a huge fan of the score since it came out and was always hoping for an expansion so seeing this coming out of nowhere is a great surprise. I ordered instantly.

I can only encourage people to buy this one while it lasts. Anyone who likes the Arnold BOND sound or the scores where Dodd heavily orchestrated (e.g. SAHARA) will be very entertained with this score I think. The action cues are a blast!
That being said, the beautiful haunting themes, the creative suspense writing, as well as the skillful blend of electronics and orchestra should really appeal to any film music fan I believe.

An excellent release!!

Had a little listen to the bits of the score that were available on Spotify and loved it. Ordered soon as I got home! First time ordering from Music Box, so hopefully the order goes smoothly smile

Thanks to the OP for the heads up on the release. I'd never have spotted it otherwise!

Just rewatched the movie yesterday in eager anticipation of the album :-)
Not as bad and confusing as I remembered it, haha.

Since the majority of the score consists of shorter cues I’m really curious now about the way they’re presented on disc. They seem to be assembled in suits, often out of sequencing. Nice concept I think.

Man, I haven’t been this excited for a release in a long time!
Again, everyone, and fans of David Arnold in particularly, should check this one out!

The CD arrived today, super quick and easy service by Music Box!

What a fantastic release this is!
Expectations were exceeded on every level.

The decision of presenting the score in out of sequencing suites works excellent. There’re no unnecessary crossfades and the combined cues compliment each other very well, even if they’re not following in film order. Every track is pretty much presented separately within each small suit, creating a very satisfying listening experience. Great work by album producer Éduard Dubois!

The sound quality is excellent, so is the unreleased music. Packaging designs are super stylish (just like the film itself) and Daniel Schweiger’s liner notes with new comments by Dodd, director Volckman and music supervisor/album producer Dubois are very informative shedding light on all relevant aspects of creating the score and album. What more can you want?!

Perfect presentation of the score IMO and my personal release of the year so far (I know, I know...just never cared that much for Dracula ;-)!

Just got this today and loving the hell out of it! It has the sound of the Daniel Craig bond films, but it transcends that into something special. And while I do like the choice to put the album in suite format, I'd love to see a chronological breakdown of cues. Highly recommended to Bond fans and David Arnold fans!
