Warner Archive are releasing this fifties sci-fi classic on Blu-ray on November 20th.

Watch the skies. Everywhere. Keep looking. Keep watching the skies!

The big question as far as this release until Warner puts up official information is whether they were finally able to find better elements for the uncut version, or whether this will be a hodgepodge of 35mm and 16mm elements like the DVD.

Finally, huh? Let's hope it is a decent copy, and/or maybe they restored it.

I hope the Blu-ray includes some special features.

The fire stunt in this film is still horrifyingly dangerous looking.

Still the best version of the book!

Warner don't do extras for their Archive releases, they'll port over any extras that were on the DVD, but not create any, but the film's the thing & they do a great clean-up, so the picture is always pristine.

An author researching a biography of John Campbell came across the original 40 pages of the novella and it's being released as part of a kickstarter campaign

Also, I'm loving the Campbell bio - it's also about Asimov, Hubbard and Heinlein. https://amzn.to/2yA1Yz7

Warner Archive has posted a note about this confirming that the transfer is entirely from 35mm elements on their Facebook page:

A Note on Our Upcoming Release of Howard Hawks’ Production of The Thing From Another World

Yes, this new master has been sourced from 35mm film elements. The restored "missing" sequences have been taken from later generation elements, so subtle and slight differences will be discernible. However, the restoration work has been under way for quite some in order to bring the release up to our customary high standards and we are quite pleased with the results. In addition, the opening titles have been corrected to the proper size and aspect ratio for the first time since its original release. Interested parties should look out for an upcoming Warner Archive Collection Podcast in which we will go into greater and more in depth details. As always, thanks for your support - and "keep watching the skies!"

Too bad they didn't just release it online instead of making a huge production. The paperback I have of the story is 55 pages long. I think you mean there's an additional 40 pages - actually 45:

The big difference is additional material. The manuscript for "Frozen Hell" is 45 pages longer (!) than the manuscript for "Who Goes There?" -- and most of the new material is set before the opening chapter of "Who Goes There?" It fleshes out the backstory. There are also a few plot differences.

Here's a post about his discovery of the extra pages.

Interesting. Like the fictional antagonist, Campbell's original was buried...which wouldn't have happened if he donated his material to Miskatonic University.

I rather like how Campbell’s story thrusts you right into things. I’m not sure a slow build up would work quite as well, but I’d be interested to read the unpublished material.

Totally agree. While I'm very interested in more backstory, it is awesome just the way it is.
I'd definitely like to get "Frozen Hell", but I have no experience with kickstarter.
Anyone here planning to pony up?

Thanks, Rameau for the heads-up on the Blu-ray and thanks TNG for the great info and links!

smile

That's a very interesting story. I'd be up for reading Frozen Hell at some stage.
