Putting things in perspective I remember seeing MARY POPPINS when it came out. I was surprised how good it was. Even though many elements of the Disney formula seemed a bit clunky. It even had a few memorable songs, although most of them like the gimmicky "Supercalifragilisticexpialedocious" did not stay with me. Even with Irwin Kostal's masterful delivery. Only over the years did all the songs set with me and the classic status set in. So seeing this new one I was surprised how much I enjoyed it and it might grow on me like the first.

But even way back then I remember not being crushed at all when it lost best picture to MY FAIR LADY.

A "proper" FYC with 29 tracks is now making the rounds on eBay:

How much of the soundtrack release is songs? How many tracks are instrumental? I have been interested in hearing how the music turned out but I also don't really want to listen to songs while working.

I really enjoy this album and hope Shaiman wins both Oscars, but score will probably go to Britell which I'm fine with too. And SHALLOW will probably win song, which I don't mind either.

I think the score has a slight chance to win. Best score often goes to musicals, LA LA LAND being the most recent.

Me too, what a superb score. I still gives me shivers at spots, particularly Nowhere To Go But Up, which probably would have been my choice for the best song nomination (it's always the quiet ballads that seem to get nominated, I mean, Beauty and the Beast is a great song, but it's not the best song in Beauty and the Beast (IMHO, clearly)).

Anyway, on a different note, there's a Sing-Along version of Mary Poppins Returns; I can't imagine that there are necessarily that many kids hassling their parents to buy them this, but for those of us who want to hear more clearly the gorgeous orchestrations, it's a wonderful alternative way to listen to the songs. It's amazing how much of the detail is obscure by the vocals (not in a bad way) so super to uncover it.

Congratulations to Ludwig Goransson! I hope Shaiman wins some day too!
