Does anyone know if Richter wrote his version of Bach's "Erbarme Dich" just for this film, or is it from some other non-film album, like his Vivaldi album? If he wrote it specifically for this film, I would LOVE to see him do a whole album of electronic Bach variations. That cue is just so drop-dead gorgeous. Of course, it's gorgeous in its original "Matthew Passion" version too, but there's something about Richter's lofty, spacey surroundings here that lift it up, much like Artemiev's Bach modulations in SOLARIS.
I can't figure it out. Richter's music is far superior to the Balfe tracks, but Balfe was brought in to replace Richter's score?
Surely on the strength of the album, Balfe did a score that was dumped barring those on the album, and the rest replaced by Richter.
I guess in this case it was more of a complement than a replacement of Richter's work. But otherwise I agree: Balfe's music in this score is not one of his better moments.

Actually, I think the Balfe bit has some great moments (as I mention in my review above); it's just overshadowed completely by the Richter.

I should give it some more spin probably. I'm not against Balfe, like many here, but his contribution for this score has failed to impress me as a standalone listening experience. It is more of a sound design than actual melodies but in the movie it worked, no question about it.
