Boy, that retirement from scoring superhero films lasted about as long as a 18 year old in the Playboy mansion.

LOL, yeah...

He never retired. He just didn't want to do bad superhero films so he looked for a way out.

I am excited about this though.

Damn. I love Zimmer, but RGW really delivered a fine score for the first film. Was really looking forward to his return on the sequel.

Huh. Looks like those whiner-babies who bitched out Elfman's Justice League score are getting their precious 'musical continuity'.

How's it feel, you tossers?

Can't wait to read the 50-page thread consisting of posts ranting about how terrible this score is, how real film music is dead, yadda yadda.

At least I have pretty good musical accompaniment to console me:

Zimmer takes over scoring duties from RGW: http://hans-zimmer.com/index.php?rub=news_3&comment=1&id_news=1102

Best news ever! Zimmer's themes and ideas were the only thing that made that first RGW score stand out in anyway. Sorry but I find the music of RGW to be instantly forgettable and generic, going by what I've heard of his scores in the films I've seen that he composed for at least.

I've gone from mild interest to really excited now that Zimmer is the official composer. It makes a change for me to be pleased with a replacement composer for once.

So... all the female composers who could use a big break were busy, huh?

Nah, they just wouldn't sell soundtracks like Zimmer, nor bring the attention to the project that the studio wants. Sorry, but it's true.

No female composer working right now, even with any sort of name has the brand and star power that Hans has. Say what you will about that, but I'm simply stating the truth, for better or worse.

This thread has everything one could want in one. Except ducks. It needs ducks.

I think anyone who's genuinely surprised by this news should just assume that, from now on, Zimmer will be scoring roughly 50% of all Hollywood tentpole films until further notice.

I doubt it's about star power as much as studios/directors/producers being stuck in a positive feedback loop, but if it is then that's an awful way to choose composers.

The duck scout is coming in advance of the ducks!

Thanks for the duck. I'll go hang myself now that I'm complete.

You do have a point, because it's this exact thing which is hampering new talent.

The same thing where you get an "Emma Watson" style situation in Beauty and the Beast, when it should have been an unknown, with a classically trained, and high skilled voice.

Watson's voice/auto tune just sounded horrible in that film and ruined an otherwise stellar cast and soundtrack, but I digress.

There are certain composers who do more behind the scenes than relying on their known talent or demoes. Over time I've heard some of this and let me tell you, new composers can't compete with some of the things certain individuals do. Ultimately, it seems based upon that knowledge, it coms down to if the studio let's a director pick their own composer and if the director is not swayed by other factors other than whether they think a certain composer might be right for the job.

And yet the MCU somehow managed to hire a female composer for Captain Marvel. Since the DCEU kinda beat Marvel to the punch with Wonder Woman (including hiring a female director who was unproven in the genre and hadn't directed a feature film in 14 years), it's pretty disappointing they can't be as progressive when it comes to composers.

Hiring people based upon their genitalia isn't progressive, it's regressive.

Directors/producers just love the comfort of collaborations.

The reason Jenkins picked Zimmer is probably the same reason Niki Caro picked HGW for Mulan. They are both female directors so you would think they be primed to push for female composers. But instead, they picked familiarity. So many directors just want to know what they are getting beforehand.

I agree. But there are a lot of female composers out there that are talented and could use a breakthrough. I am not saying they should have picked a female composer for this film, but I hope someone will take a risk at one of them eventually.
