I far prefer West and Bale to Affleck, but I have a distaste for the latter actor in general, not a fan. Just me.

Affleck was terrific as Batman. I consider the Nolan Batman trilogy the first time anybody ever nailed the Batman character right, but Affleck's even darker turn on the already dark knight was something that I really enjoyed.

I liked The Dark Knight, really don't care for any other Batman film. Affleck won me over with his performance but the films he appeared in sucked. Darker doesn't make it better.

That's part of the reason I prefer Marvel (in fact, I'm a Marvel girl since Mar-Vell in the 70s!). All the gloom and doom gets old for me after awhile.

But that's just me.

Yeah, I can see that... I can even understand that. I think most people prefer the EU Marvel movies over the current EU DC ones. As far a I'm concerned, it's sometimes this, sometimes that... I really enjoyed the Marvel movies at first (like IRON MAN), and they were the over the top joyful equivalent of the Marvel comic book characters, directly out of the comic books to the silver screen. But these days, when I see a Marvel movie, I hardly ever have the feeling that they are about something anymore. So I enjoyed the darker turns DC took with their adaptations.

It is not even that I think Batman v Superman is "better" than any of the Marvel movies, in fact, it certainly has flaws (indeed, I did not like it all that much when I first watched it), but at least this film managed to linger in my mind, unlike most of the recent Marvel movies (which are usually fun when you're watching them, but then I often just forget all about them again). Batman v Superman is the first superhero movie in a while I actually want to see a second time, so I'm going to give it another shot.

Sounds like you're very open minded! I too try to subscribe to that discipline.

I think quite a bit of my disillusionment with B vs S was actually because I truly love Man of Steel (a top ten movie for me), and I just didn't get the thrill from B Vs S. It was super cool seeing all the heroes, but it didn't work for me, and there's some buyer's regret from blind buying it streaming.

So ignore me, sour grapes may be the order of the day in my case.

Lois jumping out of the Daily Planet to test if Clark is really Superman? Silly. Jumping into the Niagra waters? Plausible.

And if it weren't for Lester, we wouldn't have the amazing Eiffel Tower set piece. What a great opening!

I find the theatrical cut absolutely excruciating to get through. The Donner Cut is far better in my opinion, excising as much of the idiotic comedy as possible and lending more gravitas to the whole affair. Though I will admit that Lester's cutting of the White House invasion is superior.

I just wish Williams could have scored it, so we wouldn't be left with perpetual rehashing of his Krypton material in both versions. Had he returned, I highly doubt that's what he'd have written.

Both versions have things I like more and things I like less. For all the silliness of the theatrical version, and yes, much of it is cringeworthy, there are sequences I still enjoy quite a bit that are missing from the Donner cut. The scene that springs to mind is the Eiffel Tower sequence at the beginning of the film, which I always thought was a lot of fun. I also thought Lois jumping into the water at Niagra Falls was far less crazy than jumping out of a building.

Both films still retain the story's biggest weakness, and that is I never felt it necessary for Superman to give up his powers. Yes, hologram ghosts told him to, but he should have had enough experience to listen critically to what they said and make his own decision.

As others have said, comparing the two versions isn't particularly fair, as the Donner cut is more of a Frankenstein's monster. In a perfect world, I would love to see animated films that remade both Superman and Superman 2 to match Donner's original vision for the story.

I think the Donner version might have been superior if he was able to finish it. So many of the takes we saw were rough. Margot Kidder in particular improved drastically in the Lester cut. She far too manic in the earlier footage. However, I agree that turning back time works best when Superman is saving the woman he loves. That would absolutely drive him toward breaking the rules laid out by Jor-El. The motivation in II just isn't there - unless she was supposed to be killed in the original Donner cut. I've never read the script for it. Also agree that since the bully's attack on Clark was erased, his going back for revenge is wrong. It was wrong anyway, but at least in the Lester cut the attack actually happened. But wrecking the pinball machine was a douche move, even though he hands the owner cash.

Michael Thau was inept, honestly, and a lot of what I don't like about the Donner Cut can be laid at his feet. The pre-credits sequence goes on far too long and his choice of footage - presumably because too much Lester footage would rob Donner of credit - is often poor. He loses some great one liners and the "general, would you care to step outside" line is a really shame to lose.

I really do feel that a mix of both versions would result in a truly great film.

Giving up his powers for Lois only makes sense pre-coitus. Lester did it right, because a fully powered Superman would probably blow her head off.
