A few Goldsmith western-related updates from The Goldsmith Odyssey...

First, and most importantly if anyone was unaware, Intrada Records is running a Kickstarter campaign to re-record Jerry Goldsmith's very first western score (and very first feature film score), BLACK PATCH! It's been reconstructed by Leigh Phillips, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra is recording this October under the baton of conductor William Stromberg! Paired with another lost Goldsmith score, THE MAN, it is now more than $3,000 over its goal with only 52 hours remaining to pledge $30 (which includes shipping cost) and get an early copy of the album...

For those interested, we at The Goldsmith Odyssey did a funny little sequel to our "Vote Goldsmith for Kickstarter" PSA from three years ago:

Jerry's sole cue written for FLAMING STAR (1960) has been released on CD by La-La Land Records on their Jerry Goldsmith at 20th Vol. 3:

Interestingly this is NOT the version of the cue on the Twilight Time iso score track which we previously covered on the podcast during our Have Gun - Will Travel episode! Apparently that version featured a truncated film ending which I guess Jerry was not involved with, so this CD version premieres his original composition which is 20+ seconds longer. And it's excellent! We discuss it (and play the unique ending) on our Soundtrack Spotlight episode here:

Intrada revisited their 1989 London Symphony Orchestra re-recording of Rio Conchos, and we also did a lengthier Spotlight episode with Doug Fake of Intrada sharing his memories of working with Jerry on the project, and outlining the little tweaks made for this new edition:

We also did Spotlights for new, slightly expanded (and now complete) editions of a modern day western and one that I liked to call an "honorary western" due to the latin elements of the score:

Hope folks enjoy these -- please feel free to let me know what you think!

Interesting that Goldsmith's middle name was King and he would compose one cue for "Flaming Star" starring the other "King" (Elvis Presley).

Thanks Jason! I'm curious what your perspective (and others reading here, if they feel like chiming in) might be about whether I should add the three Civil War scores I'm aware of Jerry composing, to this "westerns" list. I included some other pretty tangential stuff because it "sounded" like a western. These on the other hand have the right time setting, maybe not the right location setting, and the only one of the three I've actually heard (in a MIDI reconstruction of half the score) sounds more akin to later Goldsmith war/militaristic scores than it does to his western scores:

That said, it's got western star Richard Boone (Rio Conchos, Paladin in Have Gun - Will Travel) starring as a Union officer during a Civil War battle...so I'm kinda torn. What do you think?

1970 - PRUDENCE AND THE CHIEF (unsold pilot for a western comedy take on Anna and the King)

This wonderful western super-rarity is being put up for ordering tomorrow by LLL, but you can hear several exclusive advance sound clips here in our new Soundtrack Spotlight!

I'm realizing I forgot to put our Production Report on the new Intrada RSNO/William Stromberg recording of Black Patch here....

1966 - THE LEGEND OF JESSE JAMES (one episode -- sadly I haven't been able to find it anywhere)
S1E26 "Things Just Don't Happen"

Update on this: my intel had been incorrect that this was the episode of the series scored by Goldsmith. A friend of mine viewed the episode at UCLA a few months ago and confirmed it was scored by Alexander Courage instead.

And just today, Jon Burlingame kindly informed me that, based on music editor Len Engel's logs, the correct episode scored by Goldsmith was "The Man Who Was", which aired 12/13/1965. The episode exists in the UCLA Film and Television Archive for anyone interested to view it:
https://search.library.ucla.edu/permalink/01UCS_LAL/1hnia1h/alma99762153506533

Here's hoping the score can turn up in the Fox archives, and be included on a future Goldsmith at 20th volume from La-La Land...

JG westerns are a tributary I'm not really familiar with at all, though, having said that the most noticeable is probably Stagecoach (To Cheyenne). Even Geoff Love did that one on his Great Western Themes compilation with a really nice melodic orchestral arrangement.

I think most fans come to the Westerns late in life.
I did .
Some of his very best music.

HOUR OF THE GUN
RIO CONGHOS
RIO LOBO
BANDOLERO....

GREAT STUFF!
Brm

Agreed -- all 4 are excellent and among my favorite Goldsmith works. On we more I haven't seen getting a lot of love here is an earlier Western: "Stagecoach"
