Does anyone else think the 20-minute suite from this 1983 documentary, as heard on his "Selected Suites" album from 1993, is just so so SO gorgeous?
A tremendous, sprawling main theme is supported by brilliant variations right out of the classical repertoire, ranging from impressionistic to neo-baroque to Respighi-like or Holstian (appropriately) and everything in between, all without ever sounding pastiche or derivative.
The music just shine with a real lush, deeply romantic, sweeping beauty that the Paris Opera Orchestra captures well, and the music is varied while still maintaining a consistent to tone of lyrical reverence for the topic of outer space. It might be Folk's finest and most "artistic" musical achievement to me, excellent in a very different way than this also-superb heroic scoring a la BEASTMASTER 2 or NEVERENDING STORY is.
As far as I know, there's never been a thread dedicated to this gorgeous score. Is anyone else a huge fan of it? The twenty-minute suite really could be played in a concert hall and attributed to a forgotten late 19th century master, and I don't think anyone would know otherwise. Great musicianship on display here.
For a sample - scroll down a bit on his website man page (https://www.robertfolk.com/) and you can play a short cue, "Panorama", that is pretty-well emblematic of the entire score's sound and tone.

That whole 2CD set is stunning.
I don't recall a duff suite on the entire set.
The Goldsmithian TREMORS suite is ace. FAR FROM HOME is Coplandesque beauty at it's best.
The CAN'T BUY ME LOVE suite barely got me by, until the Intrada release sated my thirst properly.
Even his fantasy/animated suites featured music not on the mainstream releases.

There's a cue on his site from ... "Dark City". Did he do a score not used for the film?
