Saw a Bonanza episode today, with Ben Cartwright suffering amnesia and not recalling if he had killed a man or not. I remember similar amnesia episodes in Rawhide, Wagon Train, The Big Valley, Have Gun Will Travel, Cheyenne, Maverick, Bronco, The Lone Ranger, Gunsmoke, The Virginian, Laramie, The Rifleman and all other TV western series ever produced.

Usually, the hero's amnesia is caused by a pistol-whip to the back of the head when unwittingly stumbling into the scene of a crime... a crime for which he is then falsely accused.

With so many composers writing scores for the amnesia episodes, I'm wondering which are the favorites. The Bonanza score was very good, with a swirling, distorted theme illustrating Ben's amnesiac turmoil. The finale has some great music when Ben miraculously remembers the real killer just before the judge is about to condemn him to hang. Are there any other recommendations?

Perhaps Tadlow could consider a multi-disc set of scores for TV western amnesia episodes?

The "Gunsmoke" episode "Matt's Love Story" has a good score by Jerrold Immel:

I covered favorite cues in my massive "Gunsmoke" thread:

I know of a couple but can't quite remember, they're on the tip of my tongue.
