What are the odds that JW goes back to his roots and rearranges someone else's work for the underscore?
I would guess they're remote. With Williams reducing his output these days, and with Bernstein's music remaining vital and in no need of tampering (besides whatever stretching and compressing for time), it strikes me as an unlikely use of Williams' time.
I'm not thrilled about this project, but if there's ONE composer currently alive who should be doing the Bernstein adaptation, it's Williams. He was a close friend of Bernstein, worked with him as session musician in the past and has previously done Bernstein adaptations for the concert scene ("For New York").

If not Williams, maybe Silvestri or Newman? Williams might also recommend Ross or Dudamel?
Good news in my opinion. The loved, original classic won't cease to exist. But Spielberg, his writers and, hopefully, John Williams will undoubtedly bring something special to an new interpretation.
Well unless Steven plans to reuse Irwin Kostal's from the original film, they'll need somebody to fill in the gaps in Bernstein's original score (and there are several).
Boy I'd love to hear what JW would do with this. Lenny's original is of course the holiest of hooked and in no need of gussying up. But Williams would be uniquely able to provide any new material needed and I have a feeling he would conduct the hell out of it, his health allowing. His connection with Bernstein from the early days would give the whole project a one-of-a-kind authenticity and nostalgia.
To help this along..It does seem A Johnny T’s Hand pick ...David Newman and Guess Who is Conducting..John Williams Best Friend...Gustavo Dudamel.
The film’s music team includes conductor Gustavo Dudamel, who will helm the recording of Bernstein’s iconic score; David Newman (“Anastasia”), who will be arranging the score for the new adaptation; composer Jeanine Tesori (Broadway’s “Fun Home”), who will be working with the cast on vocals; and music supervisor Matt Sullivan (“Chicago”), who will serve as executive music producer for the film.
