Overall, the original score is better written and stronger for sure. The original has better narrative, story points, and incorporates the instrumental versions of the songs better. But this one is more about the performance and the orchestration. And on that note, the new score blows the old one away. I think they are a great companion to each other actually. They both have their strengths and weaknesses.

Also, while the majority of the two scores share the same themes, they have completely different arrangements and feel.

Either way, both scores are miles better than like 95% of the stuff that is out there.

Not much to be honest. One of my favorite all time scores.

When I say weakness, I mainly meant weakness compared the new score. Composition wise, I don't think the old score has any major flows. But I think the new score, due to the use of the orchestra, choir, vocals, etc., gives the score a more organic feel. Better performance imo as well. But to focus on bringing out bigger and bolder pieces for the orchestra, Zimmer sacrificed the nuances of the original. And personally, I prefer the original for this reason.

There are some exceptions like "Stampede," where I felt like the new version is actually better written, with less one noted intensity and more ebb and flow, but you lose the continuous intensity of the original.

But like I said, they both compliment each other quite well.

I have to admit I find the very idea of a "live action" (yeah, I know it's animated, but still... ) LION KING remake pretty odd. There seems to be an audience for these remakes, and by all means, Disney is in the business of making money. So I can see why they do it. But still.

I can see live action adaptations of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST etc, ok, why not, but the LION KING? The story is Hamlet told with animals, and in its classically animated form, I think it has a charm. But with lions and other animals that look that realistic, it makes not much sense to me, as it is a human story, not a wildlife story. The animals in the original cartoon are just "humans in disguise", but realistic lions and apes and whatever acting not the least bit like any of these animals would ever do in real life is just not something I am all that interested in.

While I am in no way principally against remakes, I don't much get the point of this one. I mean, as much as I love Wilie E. Coyote and the Road Runner (and I really love them), I would find a realistically animated "live action" remake of these old cartoons questionable as well, to say the least.

Listening to this on Spotify now though not far in. I find the songs rather weak. They don't have the power and energy of the originals. Still need to hear more of Zimmers score though...

Circle Of Life uses what sounds like the same exact backing track with the Speed percussion and Lebo M vocal, just has a new lead vocalist. Right?

I don't know man, if Warner Brothers decides to do photo-realistic remake of the Road Runner cartoons, I'm 100% there for it. I'd also support a photo-realistic remake of Tazmania with a realistic Tazmanian Devil that still somehow spins in rapid tornados.

I've played this a few times and I absolutely love this score. It borrows a lot from the original thematically speaking without being a carbon copy. Some of the songs I like, others I would cut out. This and Aladdin are my favorite new scores of the year thus far.

I've noticed a pattern with Sol.
He hates everything. But, on the rare occasions he loves something . invariably it's animated.
INSIDE OUT, PRINCE OF EGYPT, LION KING.

Let the psychoanalysis begin!

Well to be fair, on rare occasions, you have a cues like the new "Stampede" which is ridiculously awesome to a point where it forces you to fall in love.

Listened to the album on Spotify, the original being one of my favorite from Zimmer and one of my favorite of the ‘post Little Mermaid’ Disney scores (I’m not a big fan of Alan Menken scores, except for Pocahontas and Aladdin) and was disappointed.

It does sound mostly as a carbon copy of the original to me, with the few changes implemented to the worse IMO. Stamped is a great track, but it is not much different to the original. Same is valid for the songs. The new Beyoncé song is highly forgettable (not as anoying as Specheless from Aladdin, but seems also unnecessary, the new version of “Be Prepared” seems like they just were in a hurry to finish the scene, only the little twist to Hakuna Matata [the “not in front of the kids” part] was kind of fun).

Of all Lion King versions I think the second next best thing after the original is the Broadway recording with some of the score enriched with chorus and the song He Lives In You preformed twice as a nice addition to the original score. This new one seems really unnecessary (as is the movie, from what critics are saying).

Do I have to wait for a Legacy Collection version to get an expanded score?
