Those countless "Obscure References from What Turn Out to be from Star Track" threads, may have inspired me to do a similar series of topics that will assume everyone reading is a Woody Allen film fan..

...but not before appreciating the heck out of those aforementioned Star Trekkie topics.

Appreciate away, kids.

Goodness I use a ton of vague movie references in my day to day talk. Most are fairly obscure and I'm not sure if I even use any Star Trek quotes, which is actually quite surprising as I like Star Trek way more than Star Wars!

Oh I know one! "Bok a Struddle". Love that term! It's when Scotty runs into the Jeffries tube after the transporter shorts out in The Doomsday Machine. Yeah I know that isn't precisely what he says, but I've listened to it a thousand times and that is sure what it sounds like!

Hmm. I always thought he said "bogus frat, ye".

He did say that to Harry Mudd in "I, Mudd."

Well, yes, I think it's Scotty's go-to curse phrase.

Maybe it's the Tercer Mundo environment in which I work, but Star Trek--in any of its permutations--is no longer a pop cultural "touchstone" (Dilithium Crystal?). It has me believing that the franchise truly is a "cult" phenomenon, or maybe it's just become too associated with nerd stereotypes, which would be surprising given the current vogue of geeks and geeky interests. There's only so much pop culture influence to go around, I reckon.

It must indeed be the Tercer Mundo environment in which you work, if my experience is any indication. I am consistently surprised at how many non-fans of my acquaintance make casual Star Trek references. I wouldn't call it culturally defining by any means, but still a consistent cultural touchpoint (if not touchstone) that people I know use, from teens to retirees.

I suspect the recent movies have something to do with why it's still part of the lingua franca.

Funny you should mention that, since the third nu-Trek movie didn't even get discussed around here---here!--all that much.

I don't think what does or does not get discussed around here is any kind of bellwether of what anything means in the larger culture. This is a very insular, very self selecting board with an unusual focus.

The average movie goer loved the first Nu-Trek film but I think they're generally disinterested in the franchise. It did make it cool to see a Trek film and not be a Trek fan though. But real Trek fans love TOS and it's television spin offs. I know some hardcore Trek fans enjoy the Nu films but I don't think the passion is really there. So long story short, (told ya I tell the long story first!) Paramount/CBS isn't producing the Trek the majority of fans want to see.

And Abrams didn't produce the movies the non-Star Trek crowd particularly wanted to see. Pretty much fail all the way around. Course Abrams is a hack. A extraordinarily successful hack. But a hack never the less.

Time for a reboot of the reboot.

The best damn Trek I have seen in thirty years is Axanar. Instead of suing those guys they should have hired them to make Discovery!

I'm surprised at how insular many individual members at the olde FSM Boarde are! Many complain about the lack of replies to their topics, which end up looking like infrequent entries to a personal blog because no one shares their interests--outside of film music, and even that can be a lonely enthusiasm at this place.

Instead of yet another Star Trek show, they (whoever they are) should be rebooting "Voyage To The Bottom of the Sea." The deep oceans are still as yet largely unexplored, and there's always more entertainment to be had from giant octopuseseses and evil lobster men.

There were rumblings of a new Voyage back in 2004 and a serious beginning to a new movie started in 2010 by Kevin Burns. They had pretty much hammered out a script and had preproduction backing by Fox 2000 (whatever that is).

Alas once the head of Fox got wind of this he axed it. They had even chosen a cast, though I think it was their wish list of actors rather than anything else. The only one I remember was they had Chris Pine (!) to play Kowakski. The only other thing I remember was that the actors they had chosen for the movie were all horrible choices!

It's been quite a while since I have been visiting here and I don't remember how to do it, but here is the link to cut and paste:

http://scifistorm.org/2010/01/12/kevin-burns-voyage-to-the-bottom-of-the-sea-reboot/

p.s. has anyone ever considered bringing this forum into a format for the 21st century?

What are you, a trouble maker?

Anyway, Kevin Burns is past. I think that if "Lost in Space" is a success for Netflix, they'll soon look at VTTBOTS.

@ Dyfrynt- Yep, back in the 2000’s FOX announced new pilots for all of the classic IA shows. As far as I know all that ever came of that was a Lost In Space pilot (Gawd it was terrible) and it was never aired.
...Now that I think about it wasn't there also a Time Tunnel pilot filmed?

@ RoryR- From what I read Netflix's LIS will be LIS in name only.

I drove PNJ mad with my ST references in the long thread about his book and probably a few other threads. 'S just I don't expect too many to get 'em and it's enough if I elicit a knowing touche` from the few who do get it. It's similar to all the TV shows and occasional flicks with in-jokes intended for the likely select few.

Case in point: the Lemmon character discovering a turkey leg in Matthau's sofa in one of the Grumpy Old Men entries.

Oh and I've thrown in a Woody line on occasion too. Not as popular as a roomful of Young Frankensteiners but no less satisfying. Hey what can I say I was Jeopardy champ in jr. high--you think any other 8th grader could answer "Who was Ludwig Donath?" re the title character's father in The Jolson Story? roll eyes
