Way back when, in yea olden year of 2006 or so, Joel McNeely's website had a terrific photo of him with the enormous brass section he used for Soldier. Unfortunately, his website has more broken links than not - which means that the Gallery is now a Javascript error.

By chance, does anyone here have that photo on hand? A quick GIS turned up nothing.

Did you try searching the page in an archive site, like www.archive.org?

Did you try searching the page in an archive site, like www.achive.org?

I wasn't able to find anything by searching the archive site "www.achive.org." Most of the links tell me that this website is mostly devoted to Sour Cream & Chive fan fiction. Oddly, though there is a web form for submissions, all the stories on the site were submitted by the same user, described on the www.achive.org/aboutus page as "you know, basically your classic lone chive."

But really, we should track down the guy who runs the website from Warm Butter Designs. I don't know who he is, but he's probably a real jerkwad!

archive with an r. Sorry about that. I'd say I have egg on my face, but the thread will no doubt spiral into food puns.

You magnificent bastard, I've heard your audiobook! That's how I'm getting my Facebooking these days. ACTUALLY, that's a really good idea. You should do weekly audio versions of Facebook highlights. Different voices, etc. I'd sign up for that podcast.

No, I'm serious. Your profile is gone. And although our private messages are still visible, there's only a blank white box next to your name. What happened?

I'm not there right now, Brad! Deal with that! LeHah, I remember the picture you're talking about but wasn't able to find it using the archive.

It would be great if Varese could revisit this wonderful score in the Club with a deluxe edition.

Parts of McNeely's originaly score were rejected and he had to come up with new music. I don't know if the original stuff is on the score CD, but McNeely said of the original efforts:

"I spent a great deal of time designing creepy synth samples with Judd Miller, a genius sound designer. We had whispers and creaks and groans that were truly creepy. Sadly, much of these tracks were rejected. I also had a choir, which I used in avant-garde fashion, but these tracks as well were mostly not used."

Bumping this one up due to a recent listen and rewatch of the film. How great would it be to get a full score release with the score as heard in the movie along with McNeely's unused ideas?? Hint hint Varese

"Most of the music I was most proud of never made the record." - Joel McNeely

Ten trumpets

Ten French horns

Eleven -or- twelve trombones

Plus what ever the people in the back row played.

...whew that must have been an awesome (and LOUD) recording session. I really have to listen to this score now

Just rewatched the movie and WOW, there is a ton of great music missing!! Highlights include the entire opening sequence and the bomb detonation at the end. Great stuff!

Varese's press release back then:

"Kurt Russell stars in Soldier, a mega-budget science fiction blockbuster from Warner Bros. Joel McNeely's marshal score features an orchestra of military proportions: 12 sets of percussion, 18 horns, 12 trumpets, 12 trombones and 6 tubas plus strings. Fasten your seatbelts!"

big grin
