Apparently, Gerry Anderson was mortified when Barry Gray first played the Captain Scarlet "theme" for him, but then relaxed when Gray demonstrated how nimble and effective it was. Also, IIRC, Anderson mentioned that Gray was a "very clever man". Certainly got that right.
ALWAYS loved that theme song by The Spectrum. Easily one of the very best theme songs. When I was on holiday in that lovely location for another famous series, Portmeirion in the mid eighties, I was part of the annual gathering of fans who stayed there following the weekend's Prisoner convention. Every gang had a cottage and partied at each other's house through the week. It was back in the days of VHS and some kind soul brought a lot of Gerry Anderson shows to watch.
Every time it was the same. Both Fireball XL5 and Captain Scarlet end titles got a chorus from the crowd singing along to those songs. A little drunken most of the time.. On the last evening we all piled into the Hercules Hall, which is the village's bar where they had a grand piano. We couldn't resist renditions of both songs and many others from tv accompanied by one of our number who could knock out a tune. This merry band of nerds were well received by the rest of the diners/drinkers there, to the point I believe we even got a little round of applause.

Reminds me of the conventions I attended with Mike Jenner.
