THE AWAKENING
Music Composed by Claude Bolling
Conducted by Marcus Dods

Quartet Records and Studio Canal present the CD release of Claude Bolling’s classy, masterful orchestral score for The Awakening (1980, directed by Mike Newell). Starring Charlton Heston and Susannah York, the film is about an archeologist who discovers his daughter is possessed by the spirit of an Egyptian monarch, Queen Kara. To save mankind he must destroy her.

Claude Bolling creates an intense atmosphere with colorful orchestration, subtle motives, a beautiful love theme and the unforgettable “Queen Kara” theme—all demonstrating his ability to meet any musical challenge. The score is brilliantly performed by The London Studio Orchestra under the baton of Marcus Dods.

The Awakening was originally released on LP by Entr’acte Records in 1980, and in more complete form on CD as part of the Frémeaux box set “American Films by Claude Bolling,” but this edition, at the composer’s request, omitted the initial version of “Queen Kara” that appears during the main titles, with the tune played on a shawm (an Arabic oboe). We have included this cue at the end of our album, taken from the original session recording, in order to offer a more complete and comprehensive release of this amazing score.

Produced by Stéphane Lerouge, who also provides authoritative liner notes, the album has been mastered at Art & Son Studios in Paris under the supervision of the composer. The package includes a 12-page full-color booklet.

Track list:

01. Queen Kara (4:00)

so this release has an extra cue added at the end, as compared to the Fremeaux release. No mention of remastering, so should we assume it's otherwise the same as the Fremeaux?

Very excited to pick this up. It's a great score.

I wonder why Bolling wanted to omit the shawm version of the main title, and did so from his previous release of this score? It's such an inspired and evocative instrumental choice. Was he unhappy with the performance of the soloist or something?

If I had to hazard a guess (and this is just from listening to the sound clips, mind you), Bolling felt that he got the setting across well with his original track, but the producers felt it didn't sound Egyptian enough, hence the - likely begrudging - addition of the shawm.

A little bit remastering, but the sound is very good, same mastering engineer, and the Fremaux compilation was relatively recent. We could not do much more.

Mr. Bolling always felt the shawn was slightly off-key, and for this reason was not included in the Fremaux compilation.

Interesting. I'm not musically astute enough to pick up on that, I do think it's marvelously transportive and deeply evocative though so I'm grateful it's been included!

At last I can dump my so-so vinyl transfer!

Great! Of course the shawn is somewhat off-key - that's the nature of it. And without that piece the score is simply not what I love it for.

Especially when it's about shortening or cutting a release of an existing score, I think composer's wishes are not a good guideline. The people want to have the music they liked in the movie, not something else. Yeah, I know, I'm a pragmatist...

Just received this. A real gem of a score! First rate production from Quartet except...

There had to be an except...

The composer's name on both spines is spelled "CALUDE" Bolling. Argh!

Has Quartet reprinted the tray card, does anybody know?

Hope people are liking this. I think it's a really evocative and underrated piece of quiet, contemplative horror scoring. Mature, insidious and very hypnotic. I wish Bolling had written more orchestral music in general.

Great release from Quartet Records! Melodies and passages remarkable, beautiful pieces, I think! Really one of my favorite soundtracks.

And for those who want to hear the versatility and capacity of C. Bolling, also recommend the COMPLETE works in 3 wonderful CDs (from Music Box Records): Lucky Luke! Many variations and themes (not just country!), fantastic!

Yes, indeed, this score is both subtle and compelling.

My tray card for this excellent score has "Claude" spelled correctly, but spells three track titles incorrectly: "Heroglyphics" instead of Hieroglyphics... "Hadmid's Last Judgement" instead of the correct character name, Hamid... and "The Sirdab" instead of correct word for the location, The Serdab.
Maybe worth pointing out for people like me wanting to enter the correct titles in iTunes or the like.

Well you've been misspelling Basil Rathbone with a "w" for years - when are you going to fix that?! mad

I skipped on this before - and then I finally listened to the samples... and was totally HOOKED!

Fantastic score, right up my alley. Thank you, Quartet, for re-releasing this gem!

Those who love horror scores subtle and romantic - check this one out!
