One of the problems that Warners had in selling the film, was their attempt to roadshow so short a film. The film was stereo, but those tracks are long gone.

Thank you for posting this, truly wonderful. I really hope this will be released. I do recall LLL had a release scheduled which fell through, I imagine licensing issues. I live in hope this will see the light of day in the future.

I bought this cd long ago and seemed to be hard to find at the time. Anyway my most listened to Tiomkin.?? A favorite, one might say.

I've had this for a long time and find it an okay listen, though not a stand-out even among my Tiomkin soundtracks. I do agree with many of the original posters however that THE BIG COUNTRY was the big score that year and deserved the Oscar. I was surprised to read (hereabouts, if I recall correctly) that OLD MAN was Jerry Goldsmith's inspiration for his score for ISLANDS IN THE STREAM, which is at the top of my favorites for JG and seems a vastly more nuanced and interesting score than the Tiomkin. Just my opinion.

I always thought that Island In The Stream sounded a bit like The old Man And The Sea. My wife doesn't like Island In The Stream, she says it sounds like elevator music and makes me turn it off. I like it but love Old Man, especially the actual music in the film which includes the choral parts not on the album. Don't really see the need to compare them as I listen to both, that is, when my wife's not around.

Both Dimitri Tiomkin and Jerry Goldsmith were actually inspired by Claude Debussy's music.

The BBC Proms performance is truly wonderful indeed, because it reveals all the debussy-esque harmonies and perfumes of Tiomkin's music.

Definitely!

I don’t know about Goldsmith but Tiomkin was very open about all the composers who inspired him which got him into trouble when he joked about it in his Academy Award acceptance speech for The High and the Mighty with his fellow film composers.

Both composers beautifully captured the essence of the ocean and wind.

Yeah, Goldsmith was open about it too especially as regards certain scores like The Secret of NIMH and Legend. Vaughan Williams (and maybe Debussy too, initially) for Star Trek: The Motion Picture… I think he may have even specifically cited Debussy in regards to Islands in the Stream but I’d have to check to make sure.

Thanks for bringing up the subject of their mutual inspiration, Nono!

Don't forget Tiomkin's beautiful arrangement of Debussy's music in PORTRAIT OF JENNIE. I'd love for that to be recorded, but it's probably too obscure nowadays.

Throw in Bernard Herrmann’s song too. What a strange collaboration
Herrmann and Tiomkin. Only in Hollywood.
