It's been awhile since the last releases from MMM. Hopefully a new batch will be coming soon. I'm starting to go into withdrawal. I need my MMM fix soon; very very soon.

I wish he'd farm out his tapes to other labels who might release titles quicker. Or at least titles he's not interested in releasing, since it seems these are his choices rather than what we might want.

Really? There hasn't been a single MMM release that I didn't/don't want.

The whole point of his having his own label is to rescue and release scores that might never see the light of day.

Are they for everyone? No, not really. But I've never seen any request from him for ideas from others. That makes me think he knows what it is he wants to release.

Farming stuff out to others presupposes he's sitting on a vast cache of scoring masters. I don't think that's the case.

A far more useful idea is for fans wanting something other than what is being released to form their own labels and then negotiate the titles they want in their own collections.

some fans of the label have voiced a hope (on this board) that he return to his label's namesake, as opposed to releasing mainly westerns and low-budget spy film scores (which I did buy).

He's mentioned that he has several boxes of tapes - at least for Paul Sawtell, so it was my inference that there are titles within he's not interested in releasing. Maybe he only had Sawtell's westerns left, but if there are others, it would be easier if he farmed them out than if we tried to form a new label.

Or maybe some of them have clearance/licensing issues with the studios. (Just a guess.)

that's possibly true. I'm going on his response several years ago here. He said he had the tapes of his clients, so it sounded like he had representation. Maybe I'm inferring a certain possessiveness from this that doesnt exist.
He also wrote that several tapes werent labelled (might have been just Sawtell). Posting a sample of some prominent-sounding track might get some answers by fans here.
Another issue could be tape problems.

David did contribute to the book THE CREATURE CHRONICLES last year, and I believe he has said he has a similar project with Tom Weaver coming up, so he might be busy with other things these days.

The odds of any other label having the same taste as I do is about 1%. I like it that way. My purpose is to preserve and give exposure to composers and scores and genres that most of you just don't care too much about. I really do this more for me and a handful of like-minded people than for the "vast film score community." While I'd love everybody to be happy with what MMM releases, I've learned after all these years that that just isn't going to happen. So I put out music that makes me and a number of other people extremely happy.

I have taken a break from that part of music because I contributed to quite a few books and DVD projects pertaining to films and film music, both as a writer, editor, ghost-writer, etc. A few of these books have already been released, a few more are done and sitting at the publishers. Right now I'm helping three people write books about their glory days in Hollywood, and I've just finished my first humor book, which should be out in a month, and I'm halfway through another humor book.

I have a couple of other companies as well, two Scottie dogs and a wife, and more friends than I know what to do with, so everything is keeping me incredibly busy. Trust that as soon as I get caught up on some things, I hope to get back to some more MMM releases. But before I got into the music business, I had been a writer for almost 15 years, and I have been doing more work in that area lately.

But I do try to help other labels when they ask me for help, and 9 times out of 10 I ask that my name not appear anywhere on the project because I enjoy being behind the scenes. Here's hoping I can put out more music in the near-future than only about 7% of you will be interested in!

]Oh, and Jameson is right. The book Tom Weaver wrote and he was kind enough to let me tag along on won the Rondo for "Best Book of the Year" and also the "Best Primary Reference Source Book" for the Pop Culture Institute or whatever they're called. And for the past few years Tom and I have been working on a book two or three times larger than the 400-page "Creature Chronicles," which we hope to have out maybe next year.

but, but, the Sawtell stuff! We too serve who sit around waiting for the next release.

Anyway, glad you're still around and kicking.

David, you also worked a little bit on Joe Dante's "Burying the Ex" recently, correct? Does that film use some MMM recordings and/or other 1950s monster movie music?

Also, count me among the people who are eagerly awaiting future MMM releases.

That's unfortunate, since the MMM releases are what I would like other soundtrack labels to offer. I mean, a Rózsa and Tomkin once in a while is good, but Golden Age has much more to offer.

Interestingly, I had the opportunity to see "Burying the Ex" last night. It was fun, but I heard no MMM recordings on the soundtrack. It does, however, have a bland original score. And yet, the end credits scroll credits numerous cues by MMM composers, including Herman Stein, and music from "The Alligator People" and other films that I just didn't hear at all on the soundtrack. This makes me believe that an earlier version of the film was scored with MMM cues but somehow down the line it was decided that there'd be a contemporary-sounding original score instead. Can you shed any light on this, David?

I haven't seen the movie, but the music supervisor never mentioned that the music wasn't used, and I'd be really surprised if it wasn't, since there were so many places that used music from our re-recordings and OST releases. I'll have to watch a copy.

Here's my first humor book -- not a single mention of classic movies or their music!
