SECOND THOUGHTS / THE NIGHT VISITOR
Music Composed and Conducted by Henry Mancini

Quartet Records presents two hidden gems by Henry Mancini, showing the light and dark side of the composer.
Second Thoughts (1983) is an obscure dramedy about a street musician, Will (Craig Wasson), who gets his lawyer girlfriend Amy (Lucie Arnaz) pregnant. When Amy considers getting an abortion, Will declares his love by kidnapping the girl and keeping her hostage in an abandoned town on an Indian reservation. Mancini responds to the unusual challenge of scoring a comedy about abortion with a simple, heartwarming guitar theme for the baby, augmented with a few passages of his trademark woodwind comedy set-pieces for Will's bumbling. In addition to the nearly complete Mancini underscore, the program includes two songs written and performed by Craig Wasson, plus source music cues.
The Night Visitor (1971), by Laslo Benedek, answers a hypothetical question: what would happen if Ingmar Bergman decided to film a Hitchcock thriller? Starring Max von Sydow and Liv Ullman, the story is about an inmate of an insane asylum who was wrongfully convicted of murder. After lots of trial and error, our hero, Salem, figures out a way to escape the asylum every night to seek revenge on those who framed him, then creep back to his cell as if nothing happened. Mancini's score builds upon his famous music for Wait Until Dark—the terror is once again supplied by de-tuned pianos, harpsichords, synthesizers, organ and a dozen woodwinds.
Since none of the music has ever been commercially available in any form, Second Thoughts is a premiere release (sourced from the ½ ? stereo master tape). The only surviving material from The Night Visitor is the 18-minute suite prepared by Mancini and Tony Thomas, previously released by Citadel Records on LP and CD. The music has been reconfigured and reedited for the main program on this CD (with the original suite included as a bonus), offering a chronological reconstruction of the only surviving cues from the score. The CD comes with a 16-page booklet in which author Gergely Hubai discusses the films and the scores with a track-by-track analysis for both titles.

"The Night Visitor" is my favorite Mancini score.
I still own a copy of the Tony Thomas private pressing LP on which the suite from "The Night Visitor" was the flipside to Mancini's "Touch Of Evil".
The same music from "The Night Visitor" was reissued on Citadel Records CD but paired with Elmer Bernstein's "Midas Run" instead.
Now Quartet offers us 2 renditions of "The Night Visitor" (on separate tracks as well as with that suite format) in a disc with an all-Mancini program.
Each incarnation of "The Night Visitor" is different from the others, which gives "The Night Visitor" its uncommon discography.

It seems incredible the lack of interest for a completely unreleased Mancini title like "Second Thoughts". OK, the film is pretty obscure, but you don't have any curiosity?.

*I* have interest in ANY Mancini and I'm grateful for you releasing this, but as with many other fine titles I just don't have the money right now because I'm in school. I can barely afford all the definitive Goldsmith (my favorite composer) releases that come out, and so anything not by him has to really be a holy grail sort of thing for me to spring really soon. Two years from now when I'm out of school and have some disposable income, my buying habits will probably be very different...I envy those here with regular income and I really miss working at Joel's Classical Shop!

Yeah, if I had more income ANY new Mancini would be a must-buy. I'd be a Mancini completest. Same goes for Intrada's recent Elmer Bernstein premiere (Going Ape) -- Bernstein is in my pantheon not far behind Goldsmith and if I could afford it I would buy EVERY new release of his. Just bad timing for where I'm at in my life.
But I can offer major KUDOS on putting out a previously-unreleased Mancini!

I'm listening to this for the first time and enjoying it a lot more than I thought I would. The acoustic guitar and piano tracks are superb. Reminds me of David Shire's "'Night Mother", which I love.

Mancini re-recorded this on his RCA "Love Story" album which contains a bridge that I don't recall being used in the film. Early pressings had it under it's original title "Salem Come To Supper". Almost all synths on the soundtrack. The RCA album added strings and horns.

Ages ago, I plucked from the budget bin a CD that had a forgettable Elmer Bernstein score paired with the Night Visitor. I like the latter, but I have not spun it much. Is there anything on this Quartet CD that is not on that other CD?
The Citadel disc with the Bernstein score contains an 18 minute suite from "The Night Visitor".
The Quartet disc has 10 individual tracks.

Sorry but I didn't have time to add up the total minutes of the 10 tracks.
No Idea about the source tapes. Perhaps from Mancini's private library. He kept copies of everything.
I knew him and was in his office many times. I saw row upon row of tape boxes on shelves.
The late Tony Thomas was first to release the suite on vinyl. Side 2 were tracks from "Touch of Evil".
