James this is HUGH NEWS! !! I will undoubtedly buy original tracks & 3 re - recordings if you did them, as I'm sure many others who love this score would as well. Hopefully people will like the new recording as I will be using slightly larger forces than Herrmann used...rather than 4 hours...which Herrmann was not too happy with, apparently .. I will be using 8 horns stereo split 4 and 4 as well as stereo violins, stereo harps etc... James, I don't want to sound like a pedant... but why larger forces? Herrmann imagined a specific, impressionist sound - a standard sized horn choir to blend with the winds. By making it 8, you risk turning an watercolour into a oil painting, or romantic thriller into MYSTERIOUS ISLAND (which IIRC called for 8 horns, 6 trombones, 4 tubas etc.), or appeal to the contemporary Hollywood trend of oversized brass sections. IIRC, I thought Herrmann's problem with the horns was that one of the players had a drinking problem, and kept flubbing notes.

It will not be oversized as all the horns will just be used for specific sections... I have been studying he original scores for rather a while now.....however I would suggest you might like to wait until the recording is finished before passing judgement...
