La-La Land Records, WEA and Warner Bros. proudly present the remastered and expanded, limited edition 2-CD set of John Williams’ Academy Award Nominated original score to the 1987 feature film EMPIRE OF THE SUN, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Christian Bale, John Malkovich and Miranda Richardson. Heralded as one of the acclaimed composer’s finest works, Mr. Williams’ masterful orchestral score seeks no less than the openness of the human heart, mind and soul – the perfect compliment to this powerful and indelible film about a young English boy’s emotional and physical struggle to survive the Japanese occupation of China during WWII.

This deluxe re-issue was produced, assembled and mastered by Mike Matessino in cooperation with John Williams, Steven Spielberg and the film’s co-producers Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall. Disc 1 contains a full presentation of the film score, including never-before-released music, while Disc 2 pulls back the veil of the creative process with a selection of alternate cues and other additional music. A 28-page CD booklet features handsome art design by Jim Titus and Matessino’s exclusive, in-depth essay, approved by the director and composer.

EMPIRE OF THE SUN (2-CD SET) is a limited edition release of 4000 units. It will be available at www.lalalandrecords.com and other online soundtrack boutique dealers starting June 24, 2014.

It is not often, if ever, I feel a surge of emotion with the announcement of an expanded title but Empire put me there. This film, book and score had such an impact on me when it came out and I was only 17 at the time. This score ranks as one of the best to me and can't thank lala enough. Now take my money... it will be a long wait u till the end of June.

'Empire of the Sun' - still Spielberg's best and most completely under-rated in my book. I agree with John F on the influence it had. I got married and saw this the day after - it will always be my 'honeymoon movie'. I'm still astonished that young Christian Bale wasn't singled out for Oscar honours. And of course, Williams' score is just superb. This is the best news in a while.

I need to hold on my old CD, however, as one John Williams scribbled on its cover... smile

This film, book and score had such an impact on me when it came out and I was only 17 at the time.

same here, i was just 12, i really liked the film (as I did almost every film at that age), but i loved the score, which i had on tape and played to death, and then i got so drawn into the book when i read it it kind of left the film behind for me, containing as it did such a finer detail of the life of young Ballard. I've grown apart from Spielberg's more serious films over the years - the embellishment that works well in his escapist fare i find ill-suited to realistic material, which I feel needs an emotional distance to resonate, but revisiting the score is something I've been anticipating for years now, it's sure to bring back a lot of memories.

I'm assuming you mean the "Region 40443 encoding" gibberish currently below the price on the Amazon page. Pay no attention to that nonsense. There is no such thing as "Region 40443 encoding", that text is some sort of mistake.

Empire of the Sun is from Warner Brothers, their Blu-Rays have always been region-free. You should have no problem playing whichever disc you bought (US or overseas) wherever you are.

Most sad is that this thread will die as soon as almost all of us will cry "ORDERED!" and "CAN'T WAIT!!!!" in actual PR-thread. And add this sacramental "What's next?" frown
But I'm really happy, that 2 CD-set is coming. Hope it will be $24.98, not $29.98 title - this great releases will bankrupt me. big grin
