Speaking of Dragon's Lair...

While this video has been up on YouTube for eight years I just discovered it. It contains an early version of Dragon's Lair game play with many sequences cut from the final release.

Time Gal 1985

This appears to be the Japanese answer to Dragon's Lair and Space Ace. A 2D animated laser disc game.
Some scenes and play thru were clearly inspired by both of Bluth's games. Time Gal is new to me or I at least don't recall the game.

There were two other Japanese laser disc games I was aware of (and played) in the 80's. One was called "Cliffhanger" which used footage from the movie Lupin the 3rd The Castle of Cagliostro.

The other was called "Cobra Command" which used original animation produced in Japan. In this other game you were a helicopter pilot battling enemy helicopters, tanks and ships.

I love this style of Japanese animation during this period! I played both Cliffhanger and Cobra Command as much as Dragon's Lair and Space Ace.

Jack and the Beanstalk (1974)

Japan's take on the subject. I really enjoy the round designs and fluid animation. Story is a bit bizarre.

Edit: I posted this one already.

Phantom Quest Corporation (1994)

A Japanese OVA series from the 90's. Kinda of a mix between Kolchak: The Night Stalker and Ghostbusters. Only one video in the series was released. I guess it didn't sell well. This was one of the first anime's I ever purchases on VHS! Still own it along with the soundtrack. I love the opening and closing theme songs.

Star Blazers (AKA: Space Battleship Yamato)

Star Blazer was the English dub version of the Japanese anime Space Battleship Yamato which aired in the US during the 70's and 80's. I found this on YouTube in excellent quality. It was probably the first cartoon that ever aired in the US which had a continuing story line and mature themes. For the life of me I don't know why we never got a release of this on Blu Ray.

Here's the entire playlist:

Probably only of interest to me but I discovered someone did an unofficial 1080 upscale of Don Bluth's short film Banjo the Woodpile Cat. Absolutely amazing remastering. This title only received a DVD release and is not available on Blu Ray or HD streamig.

How about some Welsh animation? Anyone remember SuperTed? I think this aired on HBO in the early 80's.

Man, I loved Astro Boy.
It was so long ago, I sort of blanked it out over the years.

Godzilla: The Animated Series

Not to be confused with the Hanna-Barbera classic Godzilla cartoon, this was based off of the dreadful 1998 American Godzilla film. I had no idea this existed until about a decade ago. While I don't like the live action movie and don't consider this Godzilla, the animated series isn't half bad looking. I would've watched it back in the 90's if I knew it existed.

Godzilla (1978 TV series)

Speaking of which, here's the 70's Godzilla cartoon. It's quit dreadful. Even as a kid I knew this looked or sounded nothing like Godzilla and Godzooky was just cringe worthy. From my recollection Toho never allowed an American adaption of Godzilla to look or sound like its Japanese counterpart.

Flight of the Dragons

From Wiki:

The Flight of Dragons is a 1982 animated fantasy film produced and directed by Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin Jr. loosely combining the speculative natural history book of the same name (1979) by Peter Dickinson with the novel The Dragon and the George (1976) by Gordon R. Dickson.

It stars the voices of John Ritter, Victor Buono (in his final role before his death), James Gregory, James Earl Jones, and Harry Morgan. The film centers upon a quest undertaken to stop an evil wizard who plans to rule the world by dark magic. A major theme within the story is the question of whether science and magic can co-exist. This is told mostly through the experience of character Peter Dickinson, drawn from the 20th century into the magical realm.

Released direct to video in the United Kingdom on September 1983, it was aired as an ABC "Saturday Night Movie" on August 2, 1986, and released by Warner Brothers as a made-to-order DVD in the US on 17 November 2009 as part of the "Warner Archive Collection".

The opening song is sung by Don McLean.

THE FLIGHT OF DRAGONS

it was aired as an ABC "Saturday Night Movie" on August 2, 1986,

Wikipedia and the IMDB seems at odds as to how this film played in the U.S.

First, elsewhere in the Wikipedia entry (see the box on the right side of the page), it suggests that before the film aired on ABC on 2 August 1986, it was released theatrically on 20 August 1982 . But according to the IMDB, it first aired on television in the U.S. on 4 September 1983 and then afterwards, oddly, had a limited release in theaters on 3 April 1986.

Two different dates for the theatrical release, two different dates for the television airing, and a different order for both between Wikipedia and the IMDB. Go figure.
