I love that milkman sketch.

So good it made the python film of best bits.

Still watching the show in order...more half-arsed capsule reviews to follow. However, this thread reminds me of how much many here seem to despise comedy, though it's hugely satisfying that this topic has reached 100+ posts.

P.S. Can't stop thinking about and laughing at the thought of Arthur "Two Sheds" Jackson.

I was sitting over at a buddy's place yesterday.

(A little context--he (mid-50's) is one of those folks who's cellphone is glued to the side of their heads, and all he and his wife ever watch on TV is investigative spousal murder porn and American Idol.)

So, because I've been re-bingeing on Python lately (thanks to this thread) I surreptitiously turned his TV to YouTube and cued up The Seduced Milkman Sketch (Carol Cleveland version).
We sit through it and even after the reveal--no laugh from him. Nothing.
After a moment he says, "So some of them were in there a long time?".
I wept a little bit inside.

Based on this traumatic experience, I would suggest that you find a new buddy.

...unless your buddy saved your life "Uncommon Valor" poster style.

There is a medical reason for that here.
All aboard the spectrum express. Lol.

And you will see its the same faces posting.
Not really a shock.

Easier said than done, I'm afraid.
When he got married, I was one of the only friends from his wild 'n' woolly days that he was allowed to keep--and vice versa from my own Sweetie.
So the idea of new buddies ends up being somewhat less uncomplicated than one would think.

Series One, Episode Five: Man's Crisis of Identity in the Latter Half of the 20th Century

"Confuse-a-Cat, The Smuggler, A Duck, a Cat and a Lizard (Discussion), Vox Pops on Smuggling, Police Raid, Letters on Vox Pops, Newsreader Arrested, Erotic Film, Cartoon - Charles Fatless, Silly Job Interview, Careers Advisory Board, Burglar/Encyclopaedia Salesman."

Best Sketch: A Duck, a Cat, and a Lizard. It's the kind of sketch my friends and I would have quoted endlessly. Terry Jones was so brilliant in this. The unexpected fate of John Cleese's man in the street always makes me laugh out loud.

My Ranking: 8 out of 10.

I rewatched all of these series about 2 years ago. Don't even remember any of this.

The FSM forum consists primarily of childhood worshipers and obsolete music format hoarders with no romantic prospects, minus the odd sex-for-hire interaction.

I had the same experience with last night's episode, "You're No Fun Anymore", which is imo the runt of the Python litter thus far.

Series One, Episode Six: The BBC Entry for the Zinc Stoat of Budapest (or, It's the Arts)

Sketches include: a German composer with an extraordinarily long name; crooks plan an elaborate scheme to buy a watch; a chocolate-company owner markets "Crunchy Frog."

Best Sketch: Cleese's interview with Jones, playing Karl, the last living descendent of Johann Gambolputty de von Ausfern -schplenden -schlitter -crasscrenbon -fried -digger -dangle -dungle -burstein -von -knacker -thrasher -apple -banger -horowitz -ticolensic -grander -knotty -spelltinkle -grandlich -grumblemeyer -spelterwasser -kürstlich -himbleeisen -bahnwagen -gutenabend -bitte -eine -nürnburger -bratwustle -gerspurten -mit -zweimache -luber -hundsfut -gumberaber -shönendanker -kalbsfleisch -mittler -raucher von Hautkopft of Ulm." big grin

Cleese, mildly annoyed at having his interview subject die on him, dutifully if not enthusiastically proceeds to dig Karl's impromptu grave--while wearing a suit-- with a handy nearby shovel. This sketch is so funny to me that I think of it during those many moments when the world has treated me poorly, and which cheers me endlessly.

My Ranking: 8/10

Series One, Episode Seven: You're No Fun Anymore

"Invaders from another galaxy turn Englishmen into Scotsmen. Also: a comedy about camels; a corporate board meeting."

Best Sketch: Englishmen turning into Scotsman, though it has its moments, it's just average at best. The entire episode is the runt of the proverbial series one litter.

My Ranking: 5/10.

To get back on track, my favorite Python is Eric Idle, with Michael Palin second. I've always found Cleese too smug, Chapman too straight-laced, Jones too bland. Idle (and sometimes Palin) has the right blend of silliness and inspired lunacy.

I appreciate your sharing your preferences. We agree on Idle, who is also my favorite. However, I most respectfully disagree about everything else! Cleese, whom I consider to be the "glue" of Python, is imo never short of brilliant in everything. Chapman is the perfect leading man, Jones is a wonderful chameleon, and his drag performances always make me laugh. Palin is harder for me to describe in his Python years, but I respect him immensely as the renaissance man he subsequently became.

Series One, Episode Eight: Full Frontal Nudity

"A pet-shop customer returns his dead parrot; a gang of female senior citizens attacks a town's young men; a young army officer who joined the service to water-ski tries to resign."

Best Sketch: Yes, yes, this episode is the one with the legendary "Dead Parrot" sketch, and of course I absolutely love it. I first experienced it in its audio form and have heard it many, many times, so I am awarding the Best Sketch to Hell's Grannies. John Cleese dressed up as a street tough, and the portrayal of the neighbourhood with the grannies running rampant is great fun, and is a sketch I have not heard/seen a million times, nor has it been endlessly shoved through the pop culture wood chipper, so Hell's Grannies wins.

Other thoughts: Graham Chapman's military officer persona has already grown tiresome, Eric Idle gives us a preview of his Rutles presenter, Terry Jones begins to emerge as Python's acting chameleon. Michael Palin also starts to show his versatility.

My Ranking: 9 out of 10.

Loved Hells grannies.
At school aged 11 we had a 5 a side tournament and I entered our team as Hells Grannies. The deputy head teacher wouldn't let us enter as "A Stream of Bat's Piss" or "A Pile of Parrot Droppings"

I'll bet your team would have done much better with those other names! I'm probably alone in this belief, but I've always felt that football is corrupt: from the five-a-side playgrounds of youth all the way down to the lowly FIFA World Cup.

"I'm not on the street, ye faerie!!!"
…………

I'm certain that line wouldn't pass muster in today's "progressive", speech-restrictive times.
