However, this thread reminds me of how much many here seem to despise comedy, though it's hugely satisfying that this topic has reached 100+ posts.
There is a medical reason for that here.

Series One, Episode Five: Man's Crisis of Identity in the Latter Half of the 20th Century
"Confuse-a-Cat, The Smuggler, A Duck, a Cat and a Lizard (Discussion), Vox Pops on Smuggling, Police Raid, Letters on Vox Pops, Newsreader Arrested, Erotic Film, Cartoon - Charles Fatless, Silly Job Interview, Careers Advisory Board, Burglar/Encyclopaedia Salesman."
Best Sketch: A Duck, a Cat, and a Lizard. It's the kind of sketch my friends and I would have quoted endlessly. Terry Jones was so brilliant in this. The unexpected fate of John Cleese's man in the street always makes me laugh out loud.
My Ranking: 8 out of 10.

To get back on track, my favorite Python is Eric Idle, with Michael Palin second. I've always found Cleese too smug, Chapman too straight-laced, Jones too bland. Idle (and sometimes Palin) has the right blend of silliness and inspired lunacy.
I appreciate your sharing your preferences. We agree on Idle, who is also my favorite. However, I most respectfully disagree about everything else! Cleese, whom I consider to be the "glue" of Python, is imo never short of brilliant in everything. Chapman is the perfect leading man, Jones is a wonderful chameleon, and his drag performances always make me laugh. Palin is harder for me to describe in his Python years, but I respect him immensely as the renaissance man he subsequently became.

Series One, Episode Eight: Full Frontal Nudity
"A pet-shop customer returns his dead parrot; a gang of female senior citizens attacks a town's young men; a young army officer who joined the service to water-ski tries to resign."
Best Sketch: Yes, yes, this episode is the one with the legendary "Dead Parrot" sketch, and of course I absolutely love it. I first experienced it in its audio form and have heard it many, many times, so I am awarding the Best Sketch to Hell's Grannies. John Cleese dressed up as a street tough, and the portrayal of the neighbourhood with the grannies running rampant is great fun, and is a sketch I have not heard/seen a million times, nor has it been endlessly shoved through the pop culture wood chipper, so Hell's Grannies wins.
Other thoughts: Graham Chapman's military officer persona has already grown tiresome, Eric Idle gives us a preview of his Rutles presenter, Terry Jones begins to emerge as Python's acting chameleon. Michael Palin also starts to show his versatility.
My Ranking: 9 out of 10.

Loved Hells grannies.
At school aged 11 we had a 5 a side tournament and I entered our team as Hells Grannies. The deputy head teacher wouldn't let us enter as "A Stream of Bat's Piss" or "A Pile of Parrot Droppings"
