Tom Servo is right on. After that wonderful music from the old series this past year, it's a delight to see an expanded release of Mask of the Phantasm, and we hope for many more Shirley Walker scores in the days to come. The liner notes are something of a disappointment though. The Promise theme is not based on the main theme, and the Joker's theme is never identified accurately. I hope that we can have better notes in the future for these great releases.

This was the album that got me into filmscore. Well, if you discount Mr Williams and that Star Wars thing no one remembers...

I'm a big fan of the WB Records CD, in that its probably one of the best presentations I've ever heard of a score. For lack of a better description, its a "musical story" that progresses in a very particular fashion. I'm sure Shirley Walker was careful in how this worked, but it was lovingly done. This may be the single thing I can say I perfer about the old album. (Although the back of the LLL CD seems to be a little washed out, colorwise? No big deal.)

However, the good that LLL has done cannot be overstated. Any new or unearthed music by Walker is a celebration to the genre of music we all love and there is some amazing music that was left off of the original release (kudos to Tom Servo for picking out that huge moment at the end of "Ski Mask Vigilante"!). The sound quality originally escaped me but as I got use to the new presentation it became obvious that the transfer was superior, especially when it came to the more subtle details. I can hear counterpoints and woodwinds absent on the other album.

The notes are excellent and colorful. Something of note that the inserts only gleam over - Mask Of The Phantasm was the only Batman movie Siskle and Ebert ever agreed on. They split or disliked every other movie in the Burton and Schumacher years - so, effectively, MotP is the only Batman movie that got (or will ever get, sadly) two thumbs up. You can see their review here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_KcFFqLggY

Overall, an extremely welcomed addition. Five star affair all around.

1. This release sounds fantastic.
2. I can't believe it came out at all!
3. The liner notes are a bit pedestrian, unfortunately. No offense intended.
4. The "alternate version" of the theme is just an edited together piece from the Main Title and Batman's Destiny. It's VERY welcome to have, but it's using "alternate version" from the same knee-jerk film music dictionary that gave us our meaning of "archival" (meaning that alternate version means literally an alternate recording, not a James Nelson edit piece).

Big thanks to LaLaLand for this wonderful release.

My words, exactly ! I just received my packet this morning: I put immediatly Mask of the Phantasm in the player !

I felt sad for Ian and Shirley Walker, for their children, but the all must have to be proud of this grand score finally well released !

Can we hope for Batman: TAS vol. 2 soon ?

Sadly not any time soon. It's all up to WB and they have more pending things to deal with now that they have a new in house record company: New Line Records. I have multiple volumes planned, but no contracts to release them at this time. frown

Hold on MV, we all count on you now you did begin to bring to the world Shirley Walker's work !

We count on you for more volumes from Batman: TAS, we count on you for Superman: TAS (wonderfull main title here), we even count on you (well, I do) for a official release of Michael McCuistion's Batman: Subzero ...

While we are talking wish lists, I'd like to see Mark Snow's Birds of Prey and Joe Loduca's Legend of the Seeker. Toss in the Justice League scores as well.

Shirley did more than animated stuff.

I've been itching to get Shirley's phenominal, Emmy nominated work from Space: Above And Beyond on CD. I'm sure you could fit practically the entire show's single season of music on a two disc (or three! But thats being greedy on my part) set.

Opening - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPl60rQap8s

Love Theme - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSP9YmNdvqc#t=22s

And probably the single best intro to the series the show ever had - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeXBpw_JIzE

The show's finale featured some of Walker's most emotional and gripping music she ever wrote and it would be a blast to finally have it on CD. The show is owned by FOX, so I assume they're a little "easier" to work with on putting out CDs?
