Was just revisiting this score today. I bought it on iTunes back in '11 and thought it was great, but the presentation unsatisfying, and having since found the expanded release - Wow, lots of good stuff got left off the original release, and the album arrangement very questionable (why close it with one of the more forgettable suspense cues, "Voices from the Pit"?) I have to wonder - Between this, MIMIC and HELLBOY, why doesn't Beltrami always write music this good? Is it truly Del Toro's guiding hand? The only non-Del Toro score of Beltrami's that I've heard that I've loved is DAVID AND LISA from back in '98. Anyway - Love the orchestrations in this one - The abundance of harp, vibraphone, low winds, etc. is truly a great homage to the 70's and early 80's orchestral horror sound we got from Goldsmith, Richard Band, early Horner, etc. never mind the distinctly slashing string figures of Herrmann. It all actually sounds more like a Roque Banos score to my ears than anything else Beltrami has ever given us.
