Good news about Boiling and Delerue!

Slint, like you I'm of course taking both of them. The medieval Delerue will no doubt be a real treat. It's usually where I find him at his very best.

I wonder where all the Delerue fans are nowadays who had been on this board several years ago. No comment till now in the thread about this fine new Music Box release with two of his historical scores that are issued for the first time ever and only 146 views over there at the moment. On the other hand, just look at the LEGEND thread with much more than 2000 views and dozens of comments. A score which almost everyone already has or knows. It´s sheer unbelievable.
Typical of our times: This has almost become a genuine Goldsmith board in the meantime and people are obsessed with everything that gets re-released and expanded by him.smile

I'm interested in the Delerue and may blind buy it or wait for a possible James Southall review (he seems like the only person that may review the CDs). If these movies only aired on TV in France 50 years ago doesn't seem shocking that no one is very interested in them.

Another problem is a lot of people here don't care about the music part, only the collecting part. Which I don't mind because it keeps the soundtrack labels in business.

Side note: I'm probably buying Legend because I can't find my copy anywhere. I think I sold it years ago and just don't remember.

Nevertheless, Delerue always had a lot of fans and you could be sure that at least some of them would be here and would immediately make a comment if such rather unknown French TV scores got a release. Besides you can also listen to a lot of sound clips on the Music Box website for both of these scores - so anyone who likes Delerue exactly knows what to expect.

Excellent Delerue release... apart from the dull cover design.

True. The sound clips sound awesome! Going to be hard for me to resist this one. I'm just starting to get into Delerue and I currently only have around four of his scores. I know it's been released before, but I don't understand how the current CD of The Complete London Sessions hasn't sold out yet. It's been $10 on Varese's website for ages. Film music doesn't get much better. It's definitely a good sample of his work. But I can't get enough of film music that shamelessly plays with my emotions.

Another baffling blind spot to great film music is the MovieScore Media catalogue. I now have around 60 CDs from the collection and there is rarely a dud. Screen Archives has copious sound clips and they are marked down to $0.45 cents! I don't get why some of those scores aren't long gone.

Excellent Delerue release... apart from the dull cover design.

Agreed. Is that the only known photograph of Delerue? big grin

I can see that Stefan is very disappointed not to say upset by the lack of reactions to Delerue's set as compared to the numerous ones about LEGEND, he he. Well, we've grown accustomed to that situation, haven't we ? The cop clue even suggested stuff by Silvestri, which was not totally impossible but very unlikely.

Regarding the fact both Delerue films are not known by foreign audiences, I'd say it simply doesn't matter. I've indeed bought the DVD of LES ROIS MAUDITS a few years ago and, as far as I can remember, the music was very sparse and mixed very low throughout. To tell the truth, I didn't expect that much music to be found on the mastertapes. This series is in fact mostly based on dialogue, as in a theater play. So as Stefan said, if you like the samples, and if you like scores like THIBAUD DES CROISADES or WALK WITH AND LOVE DEATH, you certainly can't go wrong with this double CD. Some passages are pure magic: listen for instance to the main theme from LANCELOT: the sublime Austrian zither of Monique Rollin (also present in Lancelot et la Dame de Nohant and in Le couvent from LES ROIS MAUDITS) backed up by orchestra + choir. And the final featuring bells and choir is mesmerizing as well. A dream come true CD for me.

In a completely different style and mood, the Bolling samples are also excellent. Stefan, the number of copies : 350 versus 2000 for LEGEND.

Wow sounds terrific! I just simply cannot wait.

If you have the 6 CD Delerue box by Universal France which was released in 2008, on CD 6 of that box you can listen to three tracks from LES ROIS MAUDITS with 9 minutes and to a short suite from LANCELOT DU LAC with 4:20 minutes. This was all that had been released of those two scores till now. Very enjoyable and lovely stuff.

Indeed, Laurent, we´ve grown accustomed to that situation that we who are also very much interested in older French and Italian scores are clearly in the minority here whereas the majority is almost always totally focused on US scores.

In a completely different style and mood, the Bolling samples are also excellent. Stefan, the number of copies : 350 versus 2000 for LEGEND.

I know that the Bolling double CD is limited to 350 copies and it is obvious that it certainly will have only a very limited sales potential - above all outside of France. Much more so than the Delerue double CD which is not limited to 500 or 750 copies - as it is otherwise common for rather unknown French titles by Delerue -, but to at least 1000 copies which nowadays is quite a lot for such a French CD. So Music Box seems to expect - despite the obscurity of the TV movies - that many collectors will buy this release - maybe due to the fact that these are epic period scores written in a style for which Delerue is particularly well-known also in the USA with his work for ANNE OF THE THOUSAND DAYS or A WALK WITH LOVE AND DEATH.

Roy Donga, it simply depends if you like that kind of ancient music or not. For instance, the solemn opening titles from LES ROIS MAUDITS is written in a modal idiom very well mastered by Delerue. He did also great stuff of that kind for THE BORGIAS (released a long time ago by Prometheus). But there are Delerue fans who prefer his scores written for contemporary movies. It's just a matter of taste.

Besides, kudos to MBR for releasing their first Goldsmith score. And LEGEND is a stunning one.

Delerue is one of several European composers - Nino Rota being another - who used to be frequently discussed on this and other film music boards but it seems most of their fans dispersed to other areas of the net long ago. Not sure why. Delerue was, of course, one of the masters.

I think Goldsmith has emerged as being the second-most popular Silver Age composer ever (following Williams) because of the films he scored that have become *increasingly* iconic and - in many cases - are more popular than ever with Gen Xers, Millennials, and Gen Z. Plus we have everybody who loves his early work. So there is a significant generational through-line with Goldsmith that arguably makes him more accessible than any other composer of the era save for Williams. "Planet of the Apes," "Chinatown," "The Omen," "Alien," "Poltergeist," "Gremlins," etc. I think almost everybody knows these films and even casual film fans and young film students respect and/or love his music. Then that leads them to notice his name on more obscure gems like "Magic" or rediscovered masterpieces like "Seconds" and then we have new fans. It's really cool, actually. It's possible this is also one of the reasons he continues to get many new releases: the labels surely know that his name will automatically sell (again, across different generations!) and yes, that also means he will get more attention and discussion here and elsewhere. His legacy is brighter than ever.

To circle back... I'm a fan of Goldsmith's "Legend" and I'm pleased to see a slightly expanded and remastered re-release (which I understand was something many felt was impossible?) but the Delerue is more exciting because it's previously unreleased and we don't get many Delerue releases anymore. That doesn't take away from how great it is that "Legend" is back in print though, and in a superior presentation no less.

I'm not at all familiar with Claude Bolling's scores for silent film re-releases - nor did I even know this was something he did at all - but I'm very intrigued by that release too. And the Morricone scores, which I'm familiar with, are wonderful.

I think you have hit the nail right on the head with your smart observations, Dylan, and I fully agree with you. With Goldsmith you have indeed this generational through-line which you have with almost no other film music composer (maybe besides Williams) nowadays. And I would also add that Goldsmith probably wouldn´t be that popular today anymore if he hadn´t scored all these sci-fi, horror and fantasy pictures above all during the late 70s and then the 80s and 90s. Movies like STAR TREK, ALIEN, POLTERGEIST, THE OMEN, GREMLINS, TOTAL RECALL or even THE MUMMY have become huge cult titles also for a much younger generation. And as above all these genres have become particular favourites among most soundtrack collectors then one thing just leads to another.

To circle back... I'm a fan of Goldsmith's "Legend" and I'm pleased to see a slightly expanded and remastered re-release.

In order not to be misunderstood, I also think that LEGEND is a brilliant score and for me one of Goldsmith´s best from the 80s, but the old CD edition is really sufficient for me. It´s not that I find such a new release annoying in itself, but that at the moment or rather for many months now we get a new Goldsmith CD release almost every two or three weeks from all labels which is tiresome. It is quite obvious that every label wants to have a slice of the cake - but it seems that almost nothing else regarding older film scores sells anymore than a Goldsmith CD. And this fact is a bit depressing so to say as there is almost no room for other older US scores and composers anymore. Above all not for those from the Golden Age.

I'm not buying any of these releases but if I were I'd just go to Screen Archives, order what I want and have done with it.

Music Box are running their business in the way that suits them. We can take it or leave it. There are other soundtrack retailers out there. The fact is buying score CDs from niche retailers is an expensive business and that isn't going to change.

I'm pretty new to collecting film scores, but I was quite enamored of the samples on the Bolling release, so I picked it up, along with Legend and Le Professionnel / Le Marginal. I'm especially impressed with the samples of Le Marginal, that rock theme just sounds so awesome. I'm guessing that as a remastered 2CD set of Morricone with only 500 copies, it will eventually sell out, just as the previous individual CDs did, particularly with the holidays coming up. The Bolling is so limited, at just 350 copies, I can't see it staying around too long either, especially with the Buster Keaton connection, but then again, what do I know?

I always like to come at film scores along with the films. In this case, I've actually not seen any of the films, but luckily Kino Lorber has a sale on that includes Le Professionnel, so I picked that up. Unfortunately, the Blu-rays of these Belmondo action films come from older masters, so I wasn't able to justify Le Marginal (not on sale) today, but hopefully it will be included in the next Kino Lorber sale. The films all look like my cup of tea-- I recently watched Le Casse and loved it. Interestingly, Arrow Video's new remastered Blu-ray of Legend is also on sale today, but I would rather see the European theatrical cut first as I understand that, amongst other things, it has the Goldsmith score, so I will probably pick up the international Fox Blu-ray first.

Strangely, the one of the four new releases that I couldn't get into was the Delerue, even though I do have his other release in the series because I really liked the score for Splendeurs et misères des courtisanes.
