You’d struggle to find a uniform long enough but I don’t suppose that would stop them...

My mum’s older brother was killed in North Africa in 1942 and her father was gassed and lost an eye in Flanders, so I was brought up being very conscious of the horrors of war. I was prime age for conscription during the Falklands War, not that it became an issue, but I did think about how I’d feel about it at the time.

I think the most important thing for me would be if it were a defensive war. I wouldn’t be engaged if “we” were the aggressor, but for the right cause I think I’d be able to pull a trigger, and of course for my immediate family I’d sacrifice my life without a second’s thought.
