Yes, not enough Chinese, Mongoloids, retards, gays and everything in between in it to qualify.

Huh. This is the kind of post that makes people want to block you. Don't be that guy.

I agree with SBD. What a distasteful, inappropriate statement!

Or scathingly sarcastic. See, this is the problem with the internet, there's no way to know if someone is being deadpan or not...

I like this!

It's not KINGDOM OF HEAVEN or anything; it's more "Napoleon on the prowl"-type moods. But always with sophistication from Phipps. Melody, interesting textures, nice use of chorus. I can see myself getting properly into this.

Definitely much, much more score in the film than what's on this paltry album release, including lots of expanded reprises of the lovely theme. Bring on the FYC I guess.

Napoleon's story is, with Alexander the Great's, arguably the most epic in all history.

But like Oliver Stone's ALEXANDER, Scott's NAPOLEON is okay but tragically lacking in greatness. This extends to Martin Phipps' score, which has many admirable qualities but lacks genuine majesty.

A few moments of poetic license (like the ending) are puzzling because they're so unnecessary.

Surely you know this comment is not appropriate here or anywhere. Stop.

Wow, not what I expected. I was convinced it was going to be another remote control experience. Wonderful choral themes and melodies with an instantly likeable main theme in "Napoleon's Piano" which destined to be a concert favourite. Thank goodness good film music can still come out of left field and leave me wanting more. Nice job Mr. Phipps!

Agreed.
Much more acoustic sounding than I've become accustomed to from Scott films.
Playing it now and it makes perfect sense why old Ridders would junk most of it in favour of his temp-track loves.
Far too original and distinctive for him to use it in the actual film it was composed for (although Track 6 sounds like it would be more at home in Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee and some of it can't resist becoming BRAAAHHHMMMM).
The best bits have that almost laconic Morricone vibe to them.

I was shocked to see how few films directed by Ridley Scott I have liked/bothered to sit through since his early 80s efforts.
There's only two I would actually call better than average (admittedly, both ALIEN and BLADE RUNNER are very good films and way above average).
The rest are merely decent or crap.
He's one of the most overrated directors I can think of (with Chris Nolan not far behind him).

Saw the film yesterday. It has issues, despite having several jawdropping sequences that display Scott in true form. I'm writing a review of it now. Unlike HurdyGurdy above, I think Scott is one of the greatest filmmakers who ever lived, perfectly rated as the genius that he is, so when I'm critical of his work, it comes with a degree of sadness. The score, however, continues to grow on me. Great stuff!

Really loving this score. For me, it exists somewhere between Nino Rota, Christopher Gordon's score for Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (where is an expanded version of this one?), and Vangelis' wonderful score for the awful Ridley Scott film 1492: Conquest of Paradise. I'd like to see this movie, eventually. But Ridley Scott's press tour has all but told viewers to wait until the already minted director's cut lands on streaming and/or home video.

I recommend seeing it in a theater, on the biggest screen you can find.

While it's a bit choppy, due to clearly deleted scenes that would explain the plot more, the battle sequences are extraordinary.

The Battle of Austerlitz sequence, in the middle of the film, is jaw dropping. It's absolutely stunning on a huge screen.

I saw it on the full-size IMAX screen at Universal CityWalk and was glad I went. smile

I saw it too yesterday and enjoyed it immensely. I agree it's a bit choppy and just waiting for a 4-hour cut. As usual with Ridley Scott it's magnificently staged and the score works well even if he uses a lot of classical music as well.

Napoletor ?

Was is it tempted by Zimmer's Gladiator?
There's some good tracks... but no theme...

I'm from Belgium and the Warterloo track is too sad !

Will see how it works in the movie...

I would certainly love to see the extended, intended version in a theater so if that happens then I will support it. Unfortunately I cannot sustain interest in this version with regards to the amount of money and time it takes to put into going out to the cinema. Ridley Scott has never been a director I would itch to see everything in cinemas for. Certainly many of his films are worth it, though.

Well... I must revise my statement and have to agree about this not being a big academy award contender, except maybe for camera-art direction-costume and Juaquin Phoenix.
The movie itself ,I didnt enjoy so much and the story was some how too thin..

The music I found served the picture very well and it was mainly music from the era which fit perfectly. Also the original parts by Phipps worked quite well for me!
Especially the AUSTERLITZ Sequence.
I liked the GODFATHER kinda feel to it in parts.

Especially the AUSTERLITZ Sequence.

The Austerlitz sequence is the best scene I've seen all year, and probably in a long time. Stood out in a film that otherwise had a number of issues. I wrote a review of it a couple of days ago. Here it is, as run through Google Translate, for anyone interested:

Make a lake the half size of Lake Balaton in the film in Austerlitz scene, which was never there and still isn't, and critics will write that it's the best scene in the film this year.. parody big grin big grin big grin
