Dick Hyman was 92 in March - he still works occasionally.

Not forgetting Mel Brooks 93 next month - age seems no barrier he's still working pretty hard may long it continue.

Well, Mel Brooks is not a film composer, as far as I know.

Did Hyman do anything else than arrange and conduct? I know he worked on Woody Allen films as arranger, but does he have any credits as film composer?

[Edit: I just remembered he did MOONSTRUCK; and I'm too lazy to check IMDB, so I'll put him on the list]

I thought it was John Morris who did THE PRODUCERS? Perhaps Brooks did the songs, I don't know.

Brooks also did an adaption musical on Young Frankenstein, but his knowledge is being a director - producer obviously MB had some say what John Morris - Hummie Mann etc.. did.

There was a 2005 version he did the songs & music can't see anyone else credited just him & Frankenstein.

Was it DOCTOR Frankenstein who co-wrote that, or the monster himself?

By the way, I was listening to the Quinn Martin TV release, Vol. 1, and checked how many of those guys are still alive. To my surprise (if The Computer knows all), they all are, except Jerry Goldsmith and Nelson Riddle. Duane Tatro was 92 a week ago, and John Parker is 92 or 93. I don't know if they're "film-musicky" enough for the list, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

I've noticed the US contemporary composer Ned Rorem is still alive at 95, but I don't know if he's still active, or if he's ever scored any movies to qualify for this list. Does anyone know?

As far as I know, Thor, Ned Rorem wrote only once for film and his score went unused:

Kritzerland issued THE PANIC IN NEEDLE PARK several years ago.

Hi Thor. Here are some additions to the 'Over 85 Club'.

All of the following composers have written for film/TV (sometimes only doing a handful of films).

Most have also composed for the concert hall and a few are predominantly jazz composers.

Unfortunately, I was unable to ascertain if any of the composers are still active.

AGE 85:

Jan Klusák (b.1934/Czechoslovakia)

Miklós Kocsár (b. 1933/Hungary)

John McLeod (b. 1934/UK) Scored only one film, "Another Time, Another Place" (1983).

Herbert Chappell (b. 1934/UK)

AGE 86:

Ilkka Kuusisto (b. 1933/Finland)

Henry Krtschil (b. 1932/East Germany)

Bronius Kutavicius (b. 1932/Lithuania)

Lucjan Kaszycki (b. 1932/Poland)

AGE 87:

Pavel Blatný (b. 1931/Czechoslovakia)

Alexander Goehr (b. 1932/UK) German-Jewish refugee from Berlin. Came to the UK as a child with his father, composer/conductor Walter Goehr.

AGE 88:

Vytautas Barkauskas (b. 1931/Lithuania)

AGE 89:

Toni Stricker (b. 1930/Austria) Retired in 2015.

Zdzislaw Szostak (b. 1930/Poland)

Romuald Twardowski (b. 1930/Poland)

AGE 90:

Jaromír Dlouhý (b. 1929/Czechoslovakia)

Luboš Sluka (b. 1928/Czechoslovakia)

AGE 91:

Jerzy Matuszkiewicz (b. 1928/Poland) Possibly the oldest surviving member of the 'old guard' of Polish film composers.

AGE 93:

Joseph Horovitz 93 (b. 1926/UK) Austrian-Jewish refugee from Vienna. Long a resident in the UK. Most famous for his "Rumpole of the Bailey" TV theme.

You should be able to find some of the music from these composers on YouTube.

Just to confirm that the new Gerard Schurmann release on the Chandos label has indeed been released:

Yet to hear it myself but if it’s of similar quality to the other CDs in this long standing series, it likely to be good.

Now, now, Bruce. You need only to learn Polish, Czech, German, Hungarian, Lithuanian and Finnish in order to easily pronounce those names. I'm certain you will be speaking those languages in short order! ; )

Thanks for the additions, MusicUnite. Not sure I've heard of any of those. I'll add them as soon as time allows.

Since this thread was created a little over a year ago, the following composers on the list have passed away:

Krzysztof Penderecki
Lennie Niehaus
Peter Thomas
Robert Cobert
Gerhard Schurmann

So I've updated the list (a sort of "morbid" update, but there you go), replacing the ages with birth years instead. Unless anyone has any updates on William Kraft and Johnny Pate, it does indeed seem that Bent Fabricius-Bjerre is the oldest ACTIVE film composer at age 95.
