I could there enjoy a few beers, conversation, and talk films, tv and film music.
Never looked back after that.
You mean you really had a friend you could talk film music to and In public too! 
Lol. I was lucky. During that cooling down period the tee totaler I sought out was an old school friend, who happened to like sf/fantasy. We spent all evening talking these subjects, and making amateur films! We joined the local Doctor Who group, who I lead into bad ways... They were meeting a folks' houses for tea and cakes. I sorted them out by introducing the pub in the evening.....
I sort of went from reckless youth to nerd and set about corrupting the other nerds into bad ways. I saw it as broadening their horizons!

Hey Paul, your story sounds similar to mine, re corrupting a new group.
I met up with some soundtrack nuggets in the late 80s (some of whom frequent this forum now) and they used to meet in Liverpool town centre in HMV on a Saturday afternoon and then move on to various other shops before just going home.
On my first introduction with them, I couldn't believe they just went home and suggested a pint in a pub nearby.
Things would never be the same again 
Within a few months, the shop searches were done within an hour (and eventually dropped completely) and the Pub was King.
Happy hour in the Hanover! When times were happy.

Indeed the pub did indeed become king. I can't remember a time when these groups last used their parent's house (mainly because they're all over forty anyway!). It's the pub all the way. We did our bit Kev. I think of it as education.
And Rameau, you forgot one other item, I suspect common to all 'specialist' types like soundtrack collectors and genre fans.... the carrier bag!! I never got home without one, full of merch and swaps.
And especially vital in the days of LPs. You can't get your twelve inches home without one!

We should organise a 2 o clock Saturday afternoon meet up in the Hanover when some normality returns to the world.
