The subject matter doesn't merit "world building" and once they did that they fell apart. Agreed as well. I hadn't thought of it that way, but Aliens blended the best of It! The Terror From Beyond Space, Them! and Alien and rocked! I hated Alien3 at first, but I have mellowed over time. It did return to its roots with the focus on Ripley. In the over 100 years of cinema to consider, to state a sci-fi monster series like the Alien franchise is "the best thing in cinematic history" is truly unbelievable. You've actually WATCHED films other than these, right? None of the Alien films - absolutely none of them individually or as a whole - approach the heights of greatness of films like Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Psycho, The Brothers Karamazov, Spartacus, On the Waterfront, The King and I, The Maltese Falcon, Marty, Requiem for a Heavyweight, Jaws, Raging Bull, The Wizard of Oz, or All Quiet on the Western Front. Absolutely none of them. Nobody could ever prove otherwise and I seriously doubt the filmmakers would argue. The Alien films are popcorn movies for the horror/SF crowd. And I love them! He likes what he likes, but he also said Blade Runner was the greatest Science Fiction film ever made and that was the consensus critics and audiences alike. He likes what he likes, but he also said Blade Runner was the greatest Science Fiction film ever made and that was the consensus critics and audiences alike. Not a terribly controversial statement to say that BLADE RUNNER is one of the greatest science fiction films in history, is it? Whether it's THE greatest, is harder to say. Obviously, I rate both ALIEN and ALIENS higher. But it's up there and a fairly common occurence on most top 10 sci fi lists, I'd dare to say.    Posted:   Feb 18, 2019 - 6:42 AM     By:   Ado   (Member) 2001 is the best science fiction film ever made, not just my opinion, it has topped too many lists to be much of an argument. Now whether you like it or not is a different issue. Blade Runner 1982 is an iconic science fiction film for certain, to many, an achievement of art design and production design and visual effects and nothing more, but it is one of the top 10 or so science fiction films ever made. Most of those films had something to say while wowing us with their audio/visuals. Blade Runner objectively is visually interesting, and has an iconic score but the story is a slog and the acting is awful. Blade Runner is absolutely a divider, I think far more people dislike it than like it, but if you start googling you will find it on a lot of important lists, just a couple here. In a nutshell! People are trying to find a reason to like it years later, (me included!) As a society consumed with nostalgia it's fogging minds. Not everything is "misunderstood", nor should we have to try sooooo hard to like something. I've said that? Could be. Nothing wrong or controversial with that assessment, although I rate both ALIEN and ALIENS higher. Of course, they lean more heavily towards horror.
