Quotes from an interview with Junkie XL about Godxilla Vs. Kong

“A perfect example is the Godzilla vs. Kong movie that is coming out next year,” he enthused. “I’m such a Godzilla freak. I have all the Japanese versions of the movies. At a certain point, just for s**ts and giggles, I wrote something for Godzilla. About two years ago, I met the director because he showed interest in me as a composer. I asked him, ‘Do you know I’m the biggest Godzilla fan on the planet, and, years ago, I wrote some stuff.’ He was like, ‘You’re kidding me?’ So we started communicating, I tweaked what I did, played it for him, and he was totally in love.”

“On Godzilla vs. Kong, I said, ‘I think we need the biggest bass drum on the planet for this score. I know the guy who can build it, what do you think?’ They just said, ‘Let's do it.’ So I said I want a bass drum that is at least eight feet in diameter,” he laughed. “The guy called me back, and he asked, ‘Is it okay if it’s only six?’ I said, ‘Could we do eight? Why can’t we do ten?’ The answer was, ‘Well, there’s simply no cow alive that has a skin big enough to cover for a ten-foot bass drum.’ So, we have to scale it down to eight.”

“It was worth the money.”



This guy still can't seem to overcome his fixation of drums in his scores to these big budget popcorn movies.

Didn't Zimmer say something similar when starting Superman or Spiderman?
These guys seem to equate BIGGEST & LOUDEST as some kind of ticket for success.

So all this drums and percussions in Hockenbergs previous works was not enough loud, lol. In that case, I realy need to prepare my ears for this SO LOUD sound in IMAX.

At least, I hope that this biggest bass drum will not be the only creative idea from Holkenborg for Godzilla vs. Kong.

It makes me funny every time, when composers tries to make a loudest and biggest sound for monster movies, forgetting about almost everything else behind it.

All Godzilla movies should just be tracked with Ifukube's music. Even Ifukube basically did that! smile I actually really enjoyed Desplat's 2014 score but even during that I was tracking in cues from the original King Kong vs Godzilla in my head...

Honestly, i don't agree, if that was the case, we don't have such great scores by people like Oshima or Koroku.

As far as I'm concerned McCreary nailed it. That lovely balance where he loved the form already, and adapted well known stuff that he knew everyone loved (including himself) and then added his own unique twist. I.e. the Rodan theme.

And the score was amazing. It's the only Godzilla score I own. Yep. And much of that is due to this guy doing my homework for me and still adding his own voice.

It's one of my most listened to soundtracks. And much of this is due to him distilling everything I like about the form to make it almost the ultimate album on the subject.

I thought Godzilla vs Kong might be the next step. We'll see.

It’s an odd choice to make such a large bass drum. If it was a live concert I could see the impact
Of such a large percussion instrument but recording Will compress and remove any unique characteristics that would be gained building such a thing. I think it’s just a PR stunt or something that titillates the filmmakers...

I will never understand how Ifukube's economy of orchestration and smart music choices ever got translated into the stuff we've gotten from North American composers. Where Ifukube wisely utilized certain instruments in the orchestra to symbolize Godzilla's size and his destructive nature, we have gotten bloated orchestras all playing tutti at ffff. I know the composers have to compete with 120 tracks of sound FX but it seems like the polar opposite ideologically to what the Japanese composer had established. I know the budget for the original Gojira wasn't abundant but I have always wished someone like Goldenthal or Corigliano took at shot at kaiju. An interesting textural approach would be fitting for the main character.


Oh well, just wishing...

Still waiting for a decent American Godzilla score. Even Arnold's go at it was kinda lackluster and not on the same level as Stargate and ID4. Really have nothing to say about the last two. Here's cheering on Holk, he's our last great hope!

This. While various American composers have provided some decent approximations (tho, ironically, most have been during sequences where they were doing pastiche as part of a parody), I too have yet to hear a really great kaiju score. Do I think JXL is our salvation? Well, to be honest, no. BUT, I am looking forward to the film and the score regardless and hope for the best.

I think Williams got the closest with War of the Worlds.

Composers who I think would do a great job at a Godzilla score are:

Elliot Goldenthal
Don Davis
John Corigliano (especially if the tone of the film was as serious as the original Gojira)

Looks like I'm one of the few, who was tracking Reijiro Koroku's music from «Godzilla» 1984 and Michiru Oshima's music from Godzilla vs Megaguirus, while I watching «Godzilla» 2014 smile

I love the beginning of that score! Very Mahlerian! It was probably the only non Ifukube Godzilla score I really love.

Ifukube's DaiMajin trilogy is my personal fave of his. Followed by War of the Garguantuas. Gojira is fantastic however.

I do love Oshima's scores. But Ifukube is the John Barry of the Godzilla franchise (or maybe Barry was the Ifukube of the Bond franchise).
