As I recall, "Orca" was recalled because the label didn't get the rights from the studio. They just asked for permission, like that has ever been a thing, from the people who had the tapes.

It's like they've gone around and had nearly any mention at FSM removed.

On Universal Music France Facebook page (https://fr-fr.facebook.com/EcoutezLeCinema), there is a Morricone trivia ending on Orca opening credits. Thats means this long-time awaited cue will be in the 18 CD set.

I believe the problem was the Carol Connors song "We are one" that was done without Morricone's permission (added to one of his instrumental tracks).

The problem was certainly not the song, but that Music Box only dealt with Warner Chappell in France and could not deal with the actual music publisher Radiofilmusica (Laurentiis) in Italy who unfortunately have been very uncooperative during the last few years. Therefore of course they also couldn´t locate the complete recording sessions in France.
This here was part of their press release text:
"As the complete recording sesssions could not be located, Music Box Records was only provided access to the original album master tape vaulted at Warner Chappell Music France, except for the theme song mastered from the best vinyl source available."

You can read my explanations here:

This is a very good box deal (a fiver per disc) and if you don't have much by Ennio, it's a no-brainer.
BUT!!!
I imagine even the most casual Morricone fan will have the albums for THE MISSION, ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA, THE UNTOUCHABLES, CINEMA PARADISO, THE HATEFUL 8, various collections of his Spaghetti western scores and such like.
And regarding ORCA, is this a more complete version than the Quartet* (non)release? Does it contain the vocal that Morricone didn't like/sanction?
There are things here and there I don't have and I'm sure there would be some undiscovered gems hidden within, but the thought of rebuying ALL those 'already owned' scores (even if it's only a fiver) is a real bummer.
What to do...what to do...

*oops...Music Box...thanks Stefan.

Quartet had never anything to do with ORCA. smile
It can be clearly seen that ORCA will have 14 tracks which means probably three more (= Tema dell´Orca II, III and IV) than have been released on previous LPs/CDs.

Seems light on giallos and 60s/70s exploitation films.

I would pre-buy it if I knew a little more about the sound treatment. Are those new remasterings?, old remasterings? no remasterings? On the back of the box I see no mention of anything in this respect.
The aborted previous release of Orca, for example, has given me much joy with sound that is vastly superior to the previous Legend release, which was not remastered

Orca is still available on Legend. It is an exact replica as far as music tracks to the Music Box Records release except the song. I never got the chance to get the MB release because of the unexpected recall. Is the sound quality on the Legend release that aweful and unlistenable. Should I avoid purchasing it. It certainly is less expensive than the Universal 18 CD set release. I have some other Legend releases and they sound... okay.

Even though I prefer single Morricone releases which I have plenty of, this Universal/Ecoutez Le Cinema release is very tempting because of the unreleased Rosa Excelsa mentioned but especially because of Orca and the never before released extra tracks but the price... ouch for now even though it's 18 CD's and I only need one.

Quartet I am getting vibes, please tell us you will be releasing Orca!

I don't think it's been mentioned, yet but Beat records has 'La Chiave' listed as a single disc (same contents) coming on 15/11 on Cabum/Beat/CF soundtracks.Make of that what you will.

to captain X..yes its' really bad, it's like they played the LP close tom a microphone for the transcription on cd.
I still have it and I only play it on the boombox I have in the bathroom and it sound bad even there.
The "vanished" release immeasurably better.

it's incredible that La chiave is coming out only now......at least here it's a superfamous movie, I remember when it came out it was Italian box office number one for weeks, with crazy lines outside the theatres..

The Legend release of Orca, whilst far from perfect is certainly listenable and worth buying if you get it for a good price.

My much loved wife has just ordered this set for me for my Christmas birthday.

It looks impressive nine pages with two cd's in a a page and a 48 page booklet, a lot of stuff has been out before, but at least we get an extended Orca this time as well as numerous inedits.

It'll also save a helluva lot of room on my Morricone shelf.

I think she was swayed by the fact that Orca was the first film we saw as a couple and she's always had a soft spot for the score.

Here's the video advertising the collection.

Congratulations! You seem to have a lovely wife. I haven´t ordered the box yet, but I will probably do so as I love the theme from Orca and have been waiting so many years for this score to be expanded. It´s a pity that they don´t include the Dolce & Gabbana commercial Dolce in the box.

Looks a wonderful presentation a strong selection of scores, if I wasn't deep with Morricone I would buy this instantly Orca release looks identical too Legend. Happy Birthday maestro what a tribute collection this is.

The Orca release contains three new tracks, including (if the soundbite on the quiz is anything to go by) the opening music which has never been released before.

Mind that there is yet another oddity hidden in this huge box: Regan's theme from THE EXORCIST 2 has not been taken from the original soundtrack but from the 2015 rerecording achieved by the Maestro himself in Abbey Road, during the launch of THE HATEFUL 8. It means that this track was so far available only a rather rare LP.

Got very-confused with the other tracks on disc. smile - Actually all the tracks-total definitely through me off, yep, I would love to buy it - but like some Quartets or Music Box expanded, I tend to leave them not much value, I don't mean that in a crude way, I just don't buy many doubles, unless there more particular tastes, thanks for the update.

For anyone who is interested in this. The main theme from Orca is track 12 on the Orca cd. I've waited 40 years to hear this, it's absolutely gorgeous.

The book itself is large 29cmx21.5cm and it's 4cm thick. there are 9 pages, each containing two discs, if I have a problem with the set it's the fact that the discs are a bugger to get out, but that apart this is a very well presented set. It's going to take a while to work through this.
