  • Troup wrote the title song for 1956's THE GIRL CAN'T HELP IT, sung by Little Richard in the film.
    ----------------------------------------------------------
Did he also write the song Edmund O'Brien sung in the same movie?

If you are referring to "Rock Around the Rock Pile," yes, Troup wrote that as well.

Yeah!!! Once you see THE GIRL CAN'T HELP IT you never forget it.

There is no mystery as to who wrote the beautiful opening theme. I got the movie out from my collection. It's there in the opening credits . Music by Leigh Harline . Song for Julie London by Bobby Troup.

Ah Cody, I'm still not convinced Harline wrote the opening theme.

The credits say: "Song 'Man of the West' by Bobby Troup!"

The song on YouTube that Julie London sings does not sound like a "Man of the West" song. It sounds like a quiet "lounge" song she was so famous for.

Harline may have well composed the theme, but I want to see proof in black and white! smile

Cody, does your copy of the film actually say: "Song for Julie London by Bobby Troup"?

The film clip on YouTube says: "Song 'Man of the West' by Bobby Troup." That's what I have too on my VHS copy of the film.

Were the main title credits changed over the years?

According to what's in the movie, "Rock Around The Rock Pile" was Fats Murdoch's own composition.

Re: MAN OF THE WEST at JulieLondon.org: Film review:

" The movie was a critical and commercial failure on its release in 1958. This was largely blamed on the casting of Gary Cooper, who was considered badly miscast due to his age."

I'm afraid I have to agree. I thought Cooper was excellent in the title role but looked too old by now.

I think too the (apparent) commercial failure of the film was in 1958 Gary Cooper fans wanted to see a "lighter" western such as Cooper's VERA CRUZ. MAN OF THE WEST was relentlessly dark and downbeat.

Music editor: Eve Newman. Part of the Alfred Newman family?

PFK,my friend, it's not my aim to convince you of anything. It's what I believe that counts. It says ,"Music by Leigh Harline". Below that it says," Song Man of the West by Bobby Troup."
Now PFK,please tell me if Bobby Troup has written any other western music in his career. Do you know of anything, even remotely related to any other western, written by Bobby Troup ?
Would you say the music of THE HANGING TREE should be credited to Jerry Livingston instead of Max Steiner ? Of course not ! Surely you are not going to tell me Max Steiner adapted Jerry Livingston's music .
Remember this also. Bobby Troup's song from MAN OF THE WEST that was never used in the final film bares no relation to Leigh Harline's opening theme. I have to give credit where credit is due and that has to go to Leigh Harline for MAN OF THE WEST and Max Steiner for THE HANGING TREE.

But why did Bobby Troup get credit in the main titles for a song never used in the film?

Just speculating here. At the time of the 1958 film, Bobby Troup was Julie London's manager. (They would not marry until 1959.) Troup may have worked it into London's contract that in order to get her, he would be allowed to write a title song for the film, which, used or not, would still be credited in the film. Good promotion for both London and the film.

You might well be correct Bob. I just noticed the movie poster for MAN OF THE WEST said:

" Hear Julie London sing 'Man of the West.' "

I can't believe this "lounge" song would be the main title music? Looks like cooler heads prevailed and Leigh Harline must have written the beautiful and moving title music. I do like the Julie London song very much though.

And as you speculated, Bobby Troup still had his name in the title credits.

I remember now seeing many movie posters back in the 1950s saying: Hear so and so sing the song so and so in the movie."

Spinning this now for the first time, and I'm at a loss as to why it seems to have been relegated to the FSM catalog bargain bin on the second hand market

Granted, I'm a bit prejudiced as I have a soft spot for Harline's harmonic and lyrical sensibilities, but even stretching myself to be as objective as possible, it's still a gorgeous and entertaining score, and it even manages to avoid relying on the usual Coplandesque Americana vibe ("not that there's anything wrong with it!").

Anyway, when I went to discogs this evening to add it to my collection (I use their database to catalog my collection), I couldn't help but notice there's a sealed copy of the FSM CD listed for $1.49 plus shipping, which boggles the mind*, so hopefully one of yous guys pounces on it and enjoys it at least half as much as I am right now.

    https://www.discogs.com/sell/release/3649425

*Come to think of it, I paid only $7 on ebay for my used-but-like-new copy with free shipping, so even less than the one currently listed on discogs for $1.49 plus $6 shipping!

Josh, I pounced, based on your recommendation (& the opening cue).

I think the sole Harline I have is 10 NORTH FREDERICK, admittedly due to its pairing with Kaplan’s TELEGRAPH HILL score. Time to bring that out for a listen (to both). Thanks.

    Awesome!

I think I'll dust off that glorious Intrada two-fer and give it another spin as well.

Right there with you. It's an incredible and powerful western score; I think my very favorite by Leigh Harline although House of Bamboo (released first by Intrada and later by Kritzerland) gives it a run for its money.

But we all know that there are other factors at play besides the quality of the music. The film is forgotten, and Harline, despite writing a few of the most iconic Disney songs of all time (including arguably the defining one), is not a name many know.

But thanks for mentioning this one. It's been way too long since I've given it a whirl. Gotta remedy that!

Yeah it's a real shame Harline isn't well known outside of "When You Wish Upon a Star". He was a very talented film composer and for a time it looked like the labels were pooling their efforts to release a good amount of his best work (particularly his Fox output, but let's not forget that besides Broken Lance FSM also put out superb releases of 7 Faces of Dr. Lao, The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm, and The Honeymoon Machine).

Like others I'm still bummed that 23 Paces to Baker Street never happened. Very grateful to FSM/Intrada/Kritzerland for the scores we did get, though!

Harline's "Pickup on 52nd Street" and "House of Bamboo" are also excellent works, worthy of mention here.
