It should be obvious that we were thorough in our search and I was just saying where all the evidence points. Ron Meyer's remark relates to the studio's assets, not the Music Group's. Even so, a 1/4" master or a 1630 can be can considered a duplicate. What there is no trace of whatsoever are the original 3-track digital U-Matics for the album sessions. Again, UME's inventory showed they have no elements whatsoever for the original E.T. album in the U.S.

The 1/4'' analog LP master is a duplicate of the 1610 digital album master, and dynamic range had to be reduced, as Steve Hoffman said.

However, nothing was lost with the 1985 digital CD master.

A 24 bits digital transfert of the analog LP master can't bring back the lost dynamic. There's also more tape hiss, which means lost informations : a part of the recording studio ambience had been lost, and the instrumental colours don't sound the same.

I know that La-La Land did the best with what they had, but for people who want the 1982 album, the 1985 CD release is far better.

But beware, some of the subsequent CD pressings might have been made from the analog tape, and not with Steve Hoffman original CD master.

“ET was recorded on four channel 1/2" analog tape at 15 ips Dolby A with a split "mixed" feed to Botnick's two-track digital machine. From that he DIGITALLY edited the soundtrack album onto a 1610 digital master.

I prepared a DDD CD release for Uni in 1984 from the Botnick digital master (without the gaps for the side split) but I have no idea if it was used or not. The filed LP cutting master tape was 30 ips analog DUBBED at Whitney Studios from the 2 track digital tape as prepared by Botnick at Digital Magnetics in '82 (or was it '83?) So the tape marked "master" is really a dub of the digital edited U-Matic tape.

Confused? Well, I have never heard the ET soundtrack on CD so I can't help you. HOWEVER:

Listen to the beginning. If there is any tape hiss on there it's the analog safety. If it's quiet as a mouse AND it doesn't sound like noise reduction was used then it is from the tape I prepared which was completely DDD. I did it at DM under Botnick's supervision. Heh, my version had a whopping 80db of dynamic range which was almost too much for the playback gear of the time to handle. For most of the opening piece the VU meters didn't even MOVE! The analog dub was limited down to 20db which was still pretty radical for an LP cut in the early 80's on poor vinyl. I bet they had a lot of returns..”

OK, then which one is it? What catalog number is on the 1985 CD release?

Thanks for the info Steve!

I'm playing MCAD-31073 now, the "AAD" one. It is as quiet as a mouse throughout each track, including tails. You're right about the dynamic range! I noted around 42 dB in the second track. So this is probably from the DDD master and a packaging error. I can't find any other dates other than 1982 listed. Hmmm, just looked at the inner ring of the CD and it lists MCAD37264 - ie the "DDD" marketed one even though the top side of the disc says 31073! Sounds great.

Now to compare with the 1996 Pat Sullivan mastered one prepared by Shawn Murphy.

Chris Malone

MCAD37264 is the same matrix number as the original 1985 CD pressing, even if the first reissue used a different catalog number.

The first pressings of the first CD reissue were made in Japan, like the original CD.

I don't know if the subsequent US and European pressings used the very same master.

This is the original US CD release (MCAD-37264 ) made in Japan, with pictures :

https://www.discogs.com/John-Williams-ET-The-Extra-Terrestrial-Music-From-The-Original-Motion-Picture-Soundtrack/release/6003702

The first pressings of the first US reissue (MCAD-31073) were also made in Japan and used the same matrix (MCAD-37264) :

https://www.discogs.com/John-Williams-ET-The-Extra-Terrestrial-Music-From-The-Original-Motion-Picture-Soundtrack/release/4389198

But the same catalog number (MCAD-31073) have been used for subsequent US pressings, so I am not sure if they used the very same master afterwards.

To make this even more confusing, does anyone know if the version of the soundtrack album that comes with the 4K UHD set is the same master that LLL used?

I love E.T. and I own the LLL release of the soundtrack. What did I miss? Is there something new to buy?

Yes. The same. I believe Mike M. stated that somewhere in an interview or podcast? Either way, I have it and it sounds the same to me.

Nothing new to buy if you already have the LLL as it's definitive.

It is. Mike's remaster of the original OST LP actually debuted ahead of the LLL CD (September 26 2017), when it was packaged with this 4K UHD BD release (September 12 2017)

Sorry, didn't mean to lead anyone into thinking they needed this. I was only wondering if it was the same master as the previous MCA CD or if it was using Mike's new master. The track listing made it obvious that it was the "LP" program; I just didn't know if it was an older or newer master. Nice to hear Uni used the newer version. (Btw, the movie looks freaking amazing in 4K!)
