Just 5 years ago, my list would have been vasty different, since in that short time we have gotten gotten Willow, Apollo 13, Jumanji, Titanic, Air Force One, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, Harry Potter 1-3, Dracula, and The Matrix from our beloved specialty labels. WOW! What an amazing past 5 years in this hobby we've had!

Or even if I were to make a list 10 years ago, it would have all those plus Starship Troopers, Predator 2, The Abyss, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, The Lost World, Jurassic Park, E.T., Close Encounters, Jaws, Twister, The Rocketeer, Edward Scissorhands, The Last Starfighter, The Matrix Reloaded & Revolutions... wow!

Going back further, old grails of mine used to include Star Trek 1-3, Back To The Future, Predator, Gremlins, Die Hard 3, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Home Alone, Hook, Alien, Aliens...

Our beloved specialty labels literally make dreams come true.

Here's what's left as grails for me, with so many of my childhood grails now on my shelf:

Didn't even get a score album

  • Alcatraz (Tilton and Datzman)

  • The Plainsman (Williams)
  • Romeo and Juliet rejected (Horner)
  • Story of a Woman (Williams)
  • Sugarland Express (Williams)

  • Sneakers (Horner)
  • Star Wars 2-3, 7-9 (Williams)
  • Tintin (Williams)
  • To Die For (Elfman)
  • War Horse (Williams)

Has some form of expanded release, would love a more definitive/complete edition

  • Batman (Elfman) [all unique tracks from Mondo, LLL, Burton box, and Walker piano demo all in one package]
  • Beetlejuice (Elfman)
  • Casino Royale (Arnold)
  • Dead Presidents (Elfman)
  • Honey, I Shrunk The Kids (Horner)

Well, the "Complete Recordings" sets only contain 1 version of every cue from the start of their films to the end with no bonus tracks at all, and these are scores for which Howard Shore wrote multiple versions of cues for many scenes, sometimes using completely different themes, etc.

Some of these alternate compositions appeared on the CD that came with Doug's book, some on the original soundtrack albums, some are partially heard in DVD menus, some heard behind dialogue & sound effects within the original theatrical versions of the films or bonus features/documentaries, while plenty more remain in the vault, unheard by anyone outside of those who worked on the film for some 20 years now.

On top of all that, the Fellowship set is actually drawn from the extended editions cut's music stem, rather than going back to the original unedited recordings. So this means that if for the final film Peter Jackson had sections of cues dialed out or replaced by music tracked in from a different cue, many of those editorial changes are in-tact on the Complete Recordings release. (The Two Towers and Return of the Kings sets do not have this issue, only Fellowship's Complete Recordings set does.)

In short, these scores more than deserve the same "modern specialty label" treatment by a producer like Mike Matessino or Neil Bulk who would make definitive main programs of all the film versions followed by lengthy bonus track sections of all the recorded alternates.

I hope that explains their appearance on my grail list.

Not a ton left that I'd consider grails per se, but off the top of my head:

Night of the Hunter - Walter Schumann - "Holy" being the operative word since sadly I fear it will take divine intervention for this one
To Kill a Mockingbird (film tracks) - Elmer Bernstein
Story of a Woman - John Williams
The Hunting Party - Riz Ortolani
The NeverEnding Story (bells and whistles with both scores and film versions) - Doldinger/Moroder
    Gymkata - Alfi Kabiljo
At Close Range - Patrick Leonard
    American Anthem - Alan Silvestri
    Spartan - Mark Isham
    Spider-Man 3 - Chris Young

The Satan Bug - Considering the complete film recording is lost then it would be nice if a re-recording was to take place.
Danger: Diabolik - Definitely not going to see the original recording surface, and the attempt at a "re-recording" was really lackluster.
Our Man Flint/In Like Flint - These are much more likely. Though I wonder about the state of some of the cues. On the isolated score track for at least In Like Flint, certain pieces emphasize the percussion and rhythm rather than the whole orchestra, I wonder if this was a matter of the whole tracks being lost?

The on screen credit just said supervision by Joseph Gershenson. So probably stock music.

A second volume of Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, even if I'm truly grateful for the beautiful set produced by LaLaLand.

Yeah TBH this is pretty much it for me. If and when this ever happens, I will have gotten anything that I would consider a "Holy Grail" release.

Everything else falls under "yeah wow I'd love that."
