The other title Roger explicitly confirmed Disney's holding onto was The Rescuers.

The recordings are what they are. I think Disney did their homework properly back then and I doubt they will sound any better (unless alternate sources are unearthed). I think they tinkered around with the sound a bit, but nothing substantial. I really have my doubts that a 2020 remaster of "Snow White" or "Bambi" would sound better than what we already have. Content is another issue: I don't understand why not all the extant material from "Sleeping Beauty" and all the others has been included. I guess we'll have to wait for the "Very Special Legacy Edition."

Communication within Disney is allegedly terrible, which is a large reason why these releases, "Legacy" or not, have always had problems. There have been multiple cases where true, proper master elements were found and restored for home video releases, but once it came time for the label division to do their work putting those elements on CD, they were provided with the incorrect tapes, leading to releases sourced from completely improper, 2nd generation (though often much later) elements. I know from an insider that the original 90s release of "The Jungle Book" was butchered when the soundtrack producer was provided with mono elements instead of the stereo sessions, which were on loan to the home video division as the film was being remastered. The proper elements have since been remastered and put to use on newer DVD/Blu-ray releases of the film, but haven't come out on CD yet. Similarly, "Pinocchio" was miraculously discovered to be the only Disney title of its age whose score survives in its entirety, originally found back when the film was being restored for its reissue to theaters in the early 90s - but, once again, the masters provided to the soundtrack division later on were only partial, due to miscommunication. This is a pattern which has affected almost every vintage Disney title released between the 90s-early 2000s, and its affects are still seen to this day, as titles like "Bambi" haven't had a new transfer to CD since its original 90s run. I am inclined to agree that most of these titles could sound much better with a new transfer/remaster, particularly "Bambi", "Dumbo", "Snow White", and the aforementioned "Pinocchio", all of which haven't had a new dedicated transfer for CD in over 20 years. Digital restoration tools have come a long way and have made releases once though impossible a reality ("Bride of Frankenstein" comes to mind).

Many thanks for the insider information. That's really intersting. In particular as "Pinocchio" has been part of the Legacy Collection and didn't get the deluxe treatment. I was just afraid of the fact that a 2020 re-master would use mastering gimmicks like stereo reverb on mono recordings, odd equalizing and excessive compression.

Wow, that is really great news! I would have preferred that Rescuers Legacy Edition that had a tracklist leaked over a year ago, but will gladly take Hunchback as I too consider it underrated amongst the Renaissance Era scores from Menken.
