I did one episode. The Corbomite Maneuver. That wore me out. Just the thought of Balance of Terror made me abandon the project. Honestly, what works in an episode won't necessarily stand as a listening experience. I give you props for sticking with it.

From a purely musical standpoint, "This Side of Paradise" is my favorite tracked episode. I wrote it up almost 20 years ago, when we had limited CD coverage to refer to:

That's great! Wow, almost 20 years ago, too! Time flies. TSOP is definitely one of my favorite episodes overall with such a great story and dialogue and acting. I agree, it's one of my favorites in terms of tracked music episodes.

It really is a workout, so to speak! Hahaha! Balance of Terror was very painful to do and I was relieved after I finished that one. Some of the edits in that one are super jarring and really don't flow well either like you said.

I did. It is interesting that both the originals and library alternates would get used in tracked episodes, too. Guess the music editor would pick whichever version they thought sounded best and go with it. A lot of times the re-edited cues contain an original recording of one track edited with an alternate of another track. Galileo 7 indeed had a ton of editing. So far, I would say the episodes with the most edits involved were "The Alternative Factor", "Balance of Terror", "A Taste of Armageddon", "The Devil in the Dark" and "This Side of Paradise".

Thanks for that observation about the library/original track usage. Wish you kept your track lists with edits, although I perfectly understand not keeping records after a while. It's just too much to deal with.

Shortly after we released the set someone put up edited suites of all the tracked episodes on youtube and we had to insist they take them down because we were, you know, still trying to sell our set and he was essentially putting most of the music in edited form online for free. It was an amazing job in many ways and yet after hearing the bulk of a tracked episode painstakingly reproduced there would be jarring errors, like using Fred Steiner's regular, slow version of "Standoff" at the climax of City on the Edge of Forever instead of the faster-paced, more intense library version, or playing the entire first half of Courage's "Sad and Thoughtful on Captain's Theme" instead of just the second half that underscored Kirk's speech at the end of "Mirror, Mirror."
Some of the tracking edits you really wouldn't want to reproduce--"Balance of Terror" is all but unlistenable in the way all the attack sequence cues are edited. But there are also tremendously exciting things like the way "Arrows" from "Friday's Child" segues into the "Amok Time" fight music in "A Private Little War." Most or all of us can easily reproduce these edits in GarageBand, yet another reason why I love that we were able to get all this music out--if you're crazy enough you can literally recreate every musical moment of the series...

Forgive the newbie to this set here, but what does the M with a number next to it stand for in each track??

As I understand it, this was the I.D. number linking each cue in the paperwork to its position on the physical tape reel, so the cues could all be accurately found on the tapes. M stands for music, if I recall.

Ah ok thanks! The only other time I remember seeing this was with some tracks on the "TON: Ron Jones" box, but not all had them. Difference is that looks like ALL of the "TOS" have them.

I tried it a time or two. "Easy" isn't exactly the word I would use. Of course that was also back when the set was a lot newer to me and I didn't know it as well. But still, not for the faint of heart.

And yes, it's terrific that ALL the music is there.

Bought this back when it came out. Got stung by customs and the cases were broken, but I was so esctatic just to have all the music, I didn't care. La La Lands finest hour, for me. It just doesn't get better than this set

Tell me about it. Years ago I did that one myself and it was such a challenge that ended up being very frustrating in the end. You are right. It is VERY unlistenable.

You can definitely tell the difference between a tracked score that Robert Raff did and one that Jim Henrikson did. Henrikson was a much smoother music editor, that's for sure.

Me too. I was one of those that "showed interest" in the release when they did their survey. But at that particular time I lost my well paying job, was out of work for a long time and never fully recovered. So I just couldn't financially justify the purchase. I missed this and the LIS set. Sucks, but that's life.

I had a chance at this a couple times on the secondhand market and just couldn't make it work. I'm confident there will be a chance at it someday down the road.

For twice the retail price. wink

All but two of the 15 TOS albums are available for download purchase, if I recall. It's at the iTunes store, Amazon downloads, and apparently you can hear it on Spotify. Similar situation with the Lost in Space box. But it's better with the booklets you get in the actual box sets.

I just came upon an interview with Arthur Heinemann, who wrote the Space Hippies script, in Starlog #147 (Oct 1989):

"I enjoyed the episode, too, because I wrote the lyrics for some of the songs that the hippies sang. As a matter of fact, I get a royalty check from EMI about once a year for $3.47."

That's kind of amusing. Sadly, it says he died two weeks after giving the interview.

ORDERED! (I feel faint....)

Ten years ago today!

Wow. There been a lot going on, hasn't there?

According to Last.FM both Alexander Courage and Fred Steiner both made my top 10 most played artists this past year. So apparently I'm still listening to this.

It's also one of three music sets I have on display. (Arista Star Wars and The Blue Box are the others.)

Happy anniversary!
