Sparks

Their first three releases on Island Records in the seventies still get a lot of plays from me.

a-ha

Been a fan since '85, have all their releases and bootlegs and solo stuff etc, and I've seen them live numerous times.

The Melvins.

They've been going since the early eighties and they're STILL knocking out ace records.
Kurt Cobain used to roadie for them. Nirvana's first album Bleach is very early-Melvins in its sound.

Sparks for me too. Saw them live a few years ago and was blown away by the energy shown by the Maels despite their advancing years. They’ve produced around 25 studio albums in many different styles, but what they all have in common is great tunes, fabulous musical arrangements and above all wise and witty lyrics.

Don't know if I have a favorite band. I don't listen to pop music much if at all anymore.
There was a time when I enjoyed Chicago and ELO. I'm sure there are a lot of great bands, music Ive heard but didn't know who they are. Pretty sure Ive enjoyed some of the Rolling Stones stuff too.

It's of course a question similar to "what's your favorite composer", and obviously, there is more than one band whose music I enjoy.

But if I had to pick one band (sticking to the "rules"):

Talk Talk

Ellington would disagree with you. You must know more about Ellington than he does. Congratulations on your impressive expertise.

Well, that you refer to "Ellington" has "he" rather than "they" is an indication of Ellington being a person rather than a band. :-)

"Blood is the Rose of Mysterious Union."

The Doors.

"Motel Money Murder Madness Let's Change the Mood from Glad to Sadness" from LA Woman.

Referencing Hitchcock's Psycho.
