And here I thought I was an uber-fan, ha!! Thanks for the info Oct, this I did not know. Going to dig thru slowly at this, or try. ENCORE has never sounded better, even voicings that i never heard come through. It's also, after 3 decades at this, my first 80min cd! Stopped me cold when the display read 80:33. STRATOSFEAR on now, sounds as good as ENCORE. The booklet - if you take the new text there isn't a TON here, much of the book is eaten up by (admittedly enjoyable) photos & reviews, newspaper articles of the time.

So glad you posted this, GS! And fun to read the back-and-forth. I wasn't aware at all, and it's also available on all the digital sites, so I will be streaming enjoyably. (The physical package is not for me.)

I am mostly a TD fan from the 80s and forward, the oldest TD album in my collection is so far FORCE MAJEURE from 1979, so I will not buy this. But I'm happy this box receives good reviews.

Other Sean, thank YOU for not letting my thread die an ignoble death!! I'm glad there is a digital option but the packaging...its a beauty into itself... Oct!! I'd listen to Ultima but REALLY would be all over Green Desert....the enigma of that has always puzzled me. Would love it. Would be nice if Mr. Wilson got into as much more TD that he could...maybe till the 90s?

At first the news of the box was exciting, but the price tag, not so much. But, being a huge TD fan, and since I was finally able to land a job after 3 months of unemployment, it had to be mine. A great set to be sure. Could I complain? Yep . Am wondering if there's going to be another box to finish up the Virgin years? I'd love to hear unreleased music from Tangram, Logos, White Eagle, Hyperborea - did I miss one ? Some of the unreleased music, well, you can tell WHY it hasn't been released before Cyclone, if I never hear it again...fine by me! Hopefully it sells well enough to warrant another set.

While Force Majeure is certainly one of TD's finest works, how a fan can relegate Stratosfear to the burn pile is beyond me. Did I say that I relegated it to the burn pile? I haven't heard the Stratosfear album.

Been a TD fan since the early days, without a doubt one of the best sets on them full stop, or should I say so far.

Our esteemed colleague Mr. FB has gone on at some length in the past about his dislike for the earlier eras of TD. It's his loss, as those eras are the most challenging and rewarding listens of their whole career. Mind you, there is nothing fundamentally wrong with preferring one type of their styles over another (in fact, a few of their 80's albums are among my favorites). But to have not even heard some of them and still eschew the music is where I start to roll my eyes--no offense. He'll come around. The Froese-Franke-Baumann lineup is fundamentally as important as the Froese-Franke-Schmoelling lineup, even if the latter was equipped with the best synths/sounds, thanks to the technological advances of the day, not to mention the great boost Johannes brought to the fore as a composer. But '72-'77 was a magical time, and only that formation could have yielded gems like Rubycon, Stratosfear, Sorcerer and Encore. Even Cyclone was a great if brief detour that somehow led to the creation of Force Majeure, one of Edgar's brightest moments as TD's composer-in-chief (until the arrival of Johannes).

Octoberman rolling his eyes is really not something I could care about, but I'll try to explain a bit about my TD-preferences: I heard TD for the first time as a 16 year old in 1991, the song was Streethawk from 1985, as heard on The Best Of TD compilation CD. I immediately had found my new favourite group, beating Hans Zimmer who had been my number 1 for a year or two. I enjoyed most of the other tracks on the best of CD too, but not Astral Voyager from 1973's Green Desert. That one was too simplistic and monotonous, and I quickly understood that I would prefer the more melodic stuff over the early, more experimental material. I continued to explore TD, both the stuff from the 90s and the 80s material. The times that I delved into the 70s, I usually came back rather quickly to newer material. That's not to say that I don't like their 70s output at all. What I have heard of the 70-73 stuff is quite unlistenable to me, the 74-75 material starts to get a little better, but the oldest TD track that I like is the title track from Stratosfear, but as I said, I have not heard the full album. I have not heard Encore or Sorcerer, but I really hate Cyclone and don't have it in my collection anymore. So, the oldest I have is Force Majeure. So, chances are high that I will buy more 70s TD albums if I find them cheap in my local shop, but I don't think I will actively seek them out and order them online. And buying an expensive box-set like In Search Of Hades from an era which I am not that much into, is, as I have said earlier, out of the question. Politically incorrect or not.
